Default Removing "Ph" and "S" sounds in vocals

I was trying to remove the "Ph" sound in a vocal track.I thought De-essar would do it for me.But I was not able to do so after experimenting with the various settings. Then I tried the Gate - Mono.I kept all the default settins and only changed the attack to 34ms.I was able to remove the "Ph" sound .My question is:

1) Am I doing right? Is this the only way. What you guys do in this situation?

2) How to remove the "s" sound?I am not able to remove it.Not with EQ, not with De essar and not with Gate.I know I do not know what parameter to adjust.
Please help .

To remove the "esses" you'll want to dup that track and boost offending frequency serveral db. Then use that track to trigger a compressor via the side chain to effect the original track.

Check www.artistpro.com
They have on-line classes there that teach you a lot on this kind of stuff. I remember under "Dynamics" topic I read about doing the same thing someone just said: Run the sound through an EQ, boost the frequencies causing the problem, then run the new sound through a compressor with the appropriate ratio so that those problem-frequencies get compressed.

However be very carefull with attack & release time setting:
"If the attack time is too fast, the compressor will turn down the transients. This can cause an instrument to lose life and clarity. On a vocal, for instance, if the attack time is too fast, all of the “t” and “s” sounds will start to disappear. On the other hand, if the attack time is too slow and the vocal is very compressed, the t’s and s’s will fly through uncompressed and sound exaggerated"

Okay, in order:

1) Windscreen for Ph's, and hopefully catching the esses enough aswell

2) Use some easy-come-off glue and put a match vertically in front of the mic.

3) The De-esser works, too. It just takes a while to get it right.

4) Side-chain compression (Which is exactly what a de-esser does, but if you need more control, which I doubt)

I'm not familiar with this. Is this some kind of joke? If not, please supply more detail.

Hi,
The actual settings you use might be very dependant on your vocal track, but I would certainly appreciate soemone publishing the exact setup they're using to fix this sort of problem. What plug-ins, what sort of bus routing, etc.

This is great info.

Thanks,
Mark
