Regards
The 11th gen i9-11900k was just released on approx. Mar 29th, so perhaps nobody here has picked one up yet. The i9-9900k (9th gen) & i9-10900k (10th gen) were solid CPU choices, so the i9-11900k should be great. Let us know how it works!

Good to hear man, thanks. So much new tech has come out since my last build. Wondering if single thread rating is still very important for Pro Tools performance rather than total CPU mark...

Yes, still important for Pro Tools, since PT currently does NOT utilize all cores very well. In my opinion, that's where the PT code needs big improvements. There's lots of posts here of (Mac & Win) users complaining about not utilizing all cores efficiently.

I was one of the first builds on the first page and thought I would update my specs for anyone with older hardware. Original hardware from November 2013:

4th Generation Intel i7 4770K
ASUS Z87 PRO Socket 1150
Silverstone Fortress FT02B-USB3.0
G.SKILL Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) CL: 7 Model F3-1600C7D-16GTX
Corsair RM Series RM850 ATX12 v2.31
Noctua NH NH-D14
Asus GT640-DCSL-2GD3 GT 640 2 GB GDDR3 SDRAM - PCI-Express 3.0 x16 Fanless
SIIG FireWire 2-Port PCIe (NN-E20012-S2)
2 Port USB 2.0 Card
Western Digital Caviar Black 64 mb cache drives
Windows 8 Pro/8.1 and then 10

In 2017 I replaced the WD hard drives with Samsung EVO 860 SSDs.

In 2020 I replaced the EVO 860s with Samsung EVO 970 Plus NVMe M.2 drives in Vantec ARGB PCIe Adapters With Heat Sinks (no, I didn't hook up the lights)
Changed the RAM to 32 gb of Corsair - the most the MB will hold
Added a Corsair Commander Pro Computer Fan Controller - my drives are in the 38 Celsius range, even under load.
And had the case blown out - first time in 6 years and there was very little dust as my screens' mesh is micro size and I clean them monthly.
The Arctic paste is still good.

The computer is still going strong. The only thing I can update now is the video card and there is no point in doing that.

For those looking to build a top end computer, I specced out a build for a friend of mine. He had it built in March and, while it is expensive, he loves it:

Fractal Design Define 7 Case NO WINDOW
ASUS Prime Deluxe II X299 Motherboard Dual Ethernet Ports, TB 3
Intel Core i9 10980XE 18 Cores/36 Threads
EVGA 1000W Power Supply
G.Skill Ripjaws V Series RAM (64 GB as 2x32 GB)
1 Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 500 GB SSD (OS)
2 Samsung 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 1 TB SSD (Sessions and Samples)
1 Vantec M.2 NVMe PCIe x4 Adapter with ARGB Heat Sink
ASUS Dual GeForce GTX 1650 Video Card
Noctua NH-U14s Intel CPU Cooler
LG Bluray/DVD Burner/Player
StarTech.com Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter
Windows 10 Pro

Hope this information helps.

Thank you guys! One more doubt... What about integrated graphics. Back in my times integrated didn't worked well with PT, has that changed? Some z490 and z590 motherboards come with integrated Intel graphics. Cheers

It's not the MB, but rather the CPU that offers integrated graphics. For example, the new i9-11900K supports integrated graphics while the i9-11900KF does not. With the KF, you must use a video card. How WELL does int. gr. work for Pro Tools? Well enough I suppose, but most use a dedicated GPU. It seems to me (not an expert on this...) that int. gr. will further tax the CPU, so perhaps best to use a GPU. You could just try it out, and if it does not suit your needs, you could always add a proper GPU later.

Good point EGS, thank you. So still like some years ago. I guess I could take an integrated graphics CPU first, test and then add a fanless graphic card later on if I really need more power or find trouble with Pro Tools dealing with it.

Well well well, it's been a while since I've been here! Which is a good thing as I have just been working away with my setup for years now...but the time has come to upgrade.

Thinking of diving in with a 11900k build. Here are the specs I've got so far:

  • CPU: Core™ i9-11900K Processor, 3.5GHz w/ 8 Cores / 16 Threads
  • COOLER: Arctic Cooling Liquid Freezer II Series 360 All-In-One Water CPU Cooler
  • MOTHERBOARD: ROG MAXIMUS XIII HERO w/ DDR4-3200, 7.1 Audio, Quad M.2, Dual 2.5G LAN, Wi-Fi 6E, BT v5.2, 2-Way SLI
  • RAM: Vengeance LPX 128GB DDR4 3600MHz CL18 (4x 32GB)
  • CASE: Fractal Design Define 7 ATX Case, Black Solid
  • OS: 970 EVO Plus NVMe M.2 PCI-E x4 SSD, 1TB
  • SAMPLES: 970 EVO PLUS NVMe M.2 PCI-E x4 SSD, 2TB (for VIs)
  • AUDIO: Reused Evo SSD
  • PSU: SilverStone 80+ Platinum Modular Power Supply, 1000W
  • GPU: Currently going to use the onboard until I can actually get a decent card. The stock for video cards right now is dismal.

This is going to be used primarily for composing/scoring media and audio post. As always, looking forward to the thoughts of all your amazing minds out there.

Cheers,
Blizzard

I've updated a few items on the list because of out-of-stock items. Also, I am thinking of not using water cooling anymore and instead will put a Noctua NH-D15 inside. Will this be enough if I want to overclock the 11900K?

CPU: Core™ i9-11900K Processor, 3.5GHz w/ 8 Cores / 16 Threads
COOLER: Noctua NH-D15
MOTHERBOARD: ROG MAXIMUS XIII HERO w/ DDR4-3200, 7.1 Audio, Quad M.2, Dual 2.5G LAN, Wi-Fi 6E, BT v5.2, 2-Way SLI
RAM: Vengeance LPX 128GB DDR4 3600MHz CL18 (4x 32GB)
CASE: Fractal Design Define 7 ATX Case, Black Solid
OS: Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe M.2 PCI-E v4.0 x4 SSD, 1TBTB
SAMPLES: Western Digital WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe M.2 PCI-E v4.0 x4 SSD, 2TB (for samples)
AUDIO: Reused Evo SSD
PSU: Corsair RMx Series RM850x 80+ Gold Modular Power Supply, 850W
GPU: Currently going to use the onboard until I can actually get a decent card. The stock for video cards right now is dismal.

Okay, I probably should have dug in further to the reviews/opinions of the 11900k before putting this build list together. Seems that the 11900k isn't the top performer I had expected it to be.

Thinking I might just go for the 10900k instead. Seems like a better choice and should still perform really well.
