Porta Booth or DIY Booth
Anyone tried one of these or tried making your own?
http://www.amazon.com/Porta-Booth-Pr...2222660&sr=1-1 Thinking of using a box, cutting the side to slide the mic and stand thru and foam it out.. Think that would be a decent surround? |

Re: Porta Booth or DIY Booth
I would treat the room some, then look at one of these: http://accessories.musiciansfriend.c...nel?sku=430579 Too much isolation can make it sound too dead and unnatural.

Re: Porta Booth or DIY Booth
Yea but the problem with that there is no top isolation... I was thinking of getting that piece you recomended but it just seemed like a rip off to me for 100 bucks.. One can easily make that.
Why would the box make it sound dead? |

Re: Porta Booth or DIY Booth
As I said, blocking out EVERYTHING may make for an odd sound. But you are right to be concerned about the ceiling as it can affect the sound like any other surface. Now that Primacoustic gizmo could be mounted sideways to block up/down instead of side to side(with a boom stand attachment), but what kind of space are you recording in? If the walls are very close, some studio foam could take care of the walls, without making the talent feel like they are....singing into a box. Of course, feel free to try the box and see what you think of it(there are no rules on this, only suggestions).

Re: Porta Booth or DIY Booth
I'm recording in my room
I do all my FINALS at the professional studio, but, eventually trying to get my quality at home as close as possible so I don't have to make those long drives. Someone mentioned that this would be a better fit, but, AGAIN the price lol http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Reflexion/ |

Re: Porta Booth or DIY Booth
I have a home-built and have been looking at pre-fab booths and room treatment. Unfortunately, it's very difficult to do a side-by-side comparison, since most studios wouldn't have them all together in one place and there are no retailers, you buy from the manufacturer. Here's some links I've used in my research, some may be familiar, others not:
DIY Booths: http://www.palmcitystudios.com/timob...oundbooth.html http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/mar0.../studiosos.htm http://www.dawbox.com/DAWBOOTH.htm Pre-Made Rooms: http://www.gretchken.com/sound_booths.htm (they also sell foam) www.whisperroom.com/ Room treatment: http://www.auralex.com/ http://www.sonexfoam.com/http http://www.foamforyou.com/Noise%20Co...20Products.htm (cheaper, but probably not as good as Auralex or Sonex) http://www.audimutesoundproofing.com...-blankets.aspx http://www.audimutesoundproofing.com...for-walls.aspx www.movers3.com/prices.html http://moverssupplies.com/product_in...roducts_id/140 http://www.primacoustic.com/ http://www.realtraps.com/ http://www.readyacoustics.com There's lots of other companies, but these are the ones I've come across. One music mix producer I know has a basement room with PT HD and RealTraps. Another producer has the bag Ready Traps which he filled. They look okay, but not as professional - or as expensive - as the RealTraps. Another producer I work with just got the 1x4 panels from Primacoustic. They look nice too. The panels will last longer than the foam usually, although good foam should last 5 to 10 years or more. Unless you use a sound barrier, or build a double walled room, you're not going to be able to make a room soundproof. What you're really trying to do is tame the room reflections and certain frequencies through absorption so the listening environment is as good as it can be. Ethan Winer from RealTraps has a good article here: http://www.ethanwiner.com/acoustics.html There's a whole forum on studio design here: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/index.php And here's another resource for project studios: http://www.studiotips.com/ Cheers,
