Default Is it me or does the Digi001 sound like...

I've had my Digi001 for about two years now (before PT i was on a Yamaha MT8X - PT was my first digital tracker) and i love the ease of use, the software, etc. But in that same course of time I've done mixes on a Roland VS1680 and more recently a dinky little KorgD8 - in some cases mixing down straight to DAT or CDR, no software involved...and guess what, those mixes beat the [bleep] out of my PT/Digi001 mixes, what gives, I'm losing low end, character, volumes are super low on bouncing even when the meters are peaking...I literally have to bounce my mixes three times to get them to the standard CD volume. have I just been doing things wrong, I dont overcompress, over EQ or any such thing, the sound just aint that great....any suggestions to remedy the problem, any 002 with comparitive stories?

For the record I have also been through the mixers, a Behringer, Mackie and now a Soundcraft...still no difference I've ran direct outs and subs, still no remedy.

THX!

The 001 is old technology at this point.
The converter design (both a/d and d/a ) is certainly not very sweet.

If you use external converters and a nice DA like the DAC-1 you still get good sound out of a 001 rig.

just my $.02

Thanks, but the D8 and 1680 are pretty old, and the D8 is the super low end of Korg's DAW line - so now Im thinking, is it really worth it to incorporate some sort of convertor at this point (plus I would not know how to incorporate it into my scheme of working - I'm pretty nuts and bolts analog in/analog out) or maybe just go the route of a Roland VS or Digi002, any more $.02s??? Anyobdy else feel the same way about the 001.

i have a roland vs2480 AND a 002r and the 002r with protools blows away the roland. yes the roland has more inputs, but the preamps sound like crap. i find pro tools way easier and better then using a roland VS

Doesn't the Roland use some type of destructive data compression scheme on it's audio?

I agree the Rolands are hard as hell to use for intensive editing, but luckily i record some talented people so Im doing just crossfades and some end editing, no major comping or anything and yeah the Rolands use compression but i sure as hell cant tell...so yall think i should just scrap the 001 and go for a 002r?

Anyone at least have a solution as to why the hell I have to bounce my mixes three times in Spark ME to get em to CD level volume so I can have a temporary remedy to my woes.

thanks again for all the input fellas (and ladies?)!

It's pretty well known the 001 pres and converters are junk...but put some decent front end on them, and they rock.
