Thought I'd follow up on this in case there's any interest. The 250mm fan was too big and clunky to fit on the mdd G4, there's simply too much stuff crammed in that case to be able to hack it in. So instead I put the 250mm on my expansion chassis:

Notice that the plastic bezel is removed, that helps with airflow, and makes mounting the fans a breeze with the little rubber feet. These two fans are right by the CPU heatsink, pretty much the hottest part of the case. This brought my idle temps down by about 7-8 degrees, and punching about 20 7/8" holes in the side of the case(the top when rack mounted) reduced temps by another 5 degrees. interestingly enough, having the plastic side cover on or off did not affect the temps at all, the big holes are enough to get the air out of the case.

Oh yeah - look at the hole at the bottom of the case (right of the picture)... that's where I hacked in my stealth serial port
