I thought there was something in MIDI preferences to enable tap tempo from an external device?

There is.

Setup->Preferences... MIDI tab; "Use MIDI to tap tempo".

Just like it says in the linked post.

I don't think that is "real time" though.. It just takes the average of the 1/4 notes that it receives. So if your tempo is supposed to change, then it won't work because the average will still be in effect..

I could be wrong.. Here's the description in the reference guide:

Use MIDI to Tap Tempo

When enabled, you can
tap a MIDI keyboard to enter a new tempo value
into a tempo field
