Can automated panning sync to tempo?
I should have entitled my post: Can PT automation sync panning to tempo?
I'd like to automate the panning of a committed audio clip to pan L>R at the rate of the tempo for a specific section. Just wondering what kind of sync capabilities are possible with PT automation. Knowledge of how to do this on a VI track is welcome too. But preferably an audio clip. Thanks Update: Just going to do the pans manually using Touch or Latch mode.

Re: Can automated panning sync to tempo?
Well, you can with the Dolby Atmos Music Psnner
https://professional.dolby.com/produ...c-panner/#gref But that’s a whole different Atmos world. With just the basic track panner in Pro Tools you’re left doing it manually. An easy way to do it is to work in grid mode and set your grid to whatever note duration you’d like and draw in the pan. You can also use auto glide panning to tempo if your version of Pro Tools supports this feature. https://youtu.be/1qiI1FaOgTc There are also some third party plugins that will achieve panning to tempo. |

Drawing the pan manually to the grid is along the lines of what I was wondering about and the timing would be simple enough. I'll also check out some plug-ins for the fun of it. And now I know about the auto-glide feature in Ultimate.

Re: Can automated panning sync to tempo?
A very simple way to automate panning to the grid is to use the pencil tool that draws square waves. The square option can be selected by right clicking the pencil tool. Before drawing set the edit mode to grid with the resolution to the rhythmic value you want, for example eighths, triplet sixteenths, etc. Click and drag with the pencil in the pan automation lane and the squares emerge at any range evenly from left to right until you release the mouse button. In a stereo track you will need to write these in both L and R pan lanes. Easy peasy. No extra plugin needed.

Nice Edward...Thanks!
Yeah the idea of looking into a panning & motion plugin would just be to have something new to be creative with. Since I have enough plug-ins in all the other categories. I'm taking some time to delve into Pro Tools a bit more and tips like the ones you and its2loud have offered so far will be taken note of and applied. Opening up PT on my laptop for a little tutorial based on the automation tips offered. Kind regards, Mike

Re: Can automated panning sync to tempo?
Another thing I don't think I saw above (might be and I didn't see!),
In many synths or plug-ins you can control a pan parameter. If you have a way in that synth or via some mapping plugs, you might sync an LFO to tempo then modulate a pan parameter with that LFO. You'd have the rate and amount on the LFO and the pan setting might be set at a default level, then you can modulate the depth of your effect by automating the rate and amount.

While I'm just beginning to delve into synth parameters I feel what you mean & the language you speak. I can hear & feel it right now... I mainly play guitar and use mostly preset synth sounds or blend those to create my own. But I'm learning more and more how to customize with subtle changes like "more of this, less of this" within my synths. I've heard stuff going side to side. I imagine the key word would be "pan" in the synth ref manuals. I'm pretty sure the softsynths I have are more than capable of the task. Not the greatest but quite cool & capable: ANA 2.5 Hybrid 3 Waves Element 2 AIR Creative Collection/Xpand! 2 Native Instruments GR6 Pro FX rack (Has some cool components for FX too) I read up on automation last night and by what I've learned, things are pretty much attainable in just a few steps. I've only done one automation move before but a refresher will enable me to do another. And here it comes.....Mikey's automation move <> ...And there it went... After all, I'm just a guitarist and the demos are just to convey ideas for further production. All with a view to working for a more realized version. Thanks nednednerb!

Re: Can automated panning sync to tempo?
You've got SoundToys listed in your sig... PanMan is a great plug for doing this on any track type...

Yeah, I know they haven't updated their suite in a while, but their V5 bundle gets more use here than any other group of plugs by far... def worth demo'ing... Enjoy!
