Default Imac's and pro-tools...

I'm thinking about getting an IMac, dual 2.66ghz 24inch standard model. I currently have a PC and everything runs fine, but I want to be able to use Logic as well, so a Mac seems the most obvious choice.

Does anyone here use one with pro-tools 8osc3 and if so how succesfully? Are they expandable? i.e can you install a secondary hard-drive in them? Can you get them with more than one fire-wire port?

Thanks

All those questions can be answered on the apple website.

You don't really need more than one firewire port. Daisy-chaining allows you to plug multiple fw devices into one port. Also, wait until Snow Leopard is qualified.

Fenderrocker:

The apple website contains no user information regarding how successfully PT8 runs on an Intel Core Duo 2.6ghz imac. Where better place to ask than on here about such things? Also, does daisy chaining firewire devices not reduce bandwidth on a single port?

R.E post title:
I'm more after peoples personal experiences with using an imac for music production and if there were any problems they had to resolve before they had the machine running smoothly. The questions I asked were just a couple of potential issues I saw with them.

Search the forum for IMAC.

Your specs have to be exact with the IMAC. It is not forgiving.

Do as much research here as you can.

Find someone who has a successful set up and duplicate it.

It may or may not work for you.

"Search Function" "IMAC"

Another thing to consider with the IMac is that you don't have an expandible PCI bus, so you can't run plug-ins that require hardware assistance, such as the UA plug-ins.

Whats with the forum police?

Basically, if you can't answer my simple questions, wind your neck in and say nothing. I don't need the cliche' retorts of "search function yaada yaada yaada" I just need to hear from people who use imacs.

Not tiring to be the fuzz

Sorry, I was attempting to be helpful.

You were standing there with your thumb out and I was trying to tell you where you could get a ride.

I use PT8 with an Imac, never had any problems. Sometimes it's just a little hard on the cpu if I use alot of virtual instruments. I have the maxed out 24" Imac from last year.

I'm using an mbox2 pro with: roland mv 8800, moog little phatty, m-audio axiom keyboard, 2 krk monitors. Hope this helps...

Don't use logic though.

I was using a first generation Aluminum 24" iMac (2.4ghz) with an Mbox2 and PT8cs3. It worked, but for me wasn't powerful enough. Not to mention it wasn't the most stable with PT LE. I'd usually have at least one PT crash a day. I don't know how well or not the newer models run PT.

You can only get one hard drive in them, so you'll have to have an external firewire drive.

They are really nice machines, but the lack of expandability, and of course the crashes, was a thorn in the side for me.

EDIT: The lack of power I experienced was due to using Revalver mkIII and the T-Racks 3 singles. I should have mentioned that before becuase some of the T3 plugs are very CPU intensive, and the RTAS version of Revalver mkiii runs pretty bad, which may very well be the source of a lot of my crashes.
