Default PTLE 5.3.1 with higher sample rates that 48khz?

Question:
Lets assume that I have outboard, digital recording equipment that can save the files to hard disk at sample rates of 96-192khz. Will PTLE 5.3.1 handle that sample rate? I realise that my 001 is limited to 48khz, but is the software also limited? That rases another question, is it the hardware of the 001 that determines the max resolution for playback and editing or is it the software?

The reason for my question is this:
What if I had a session recorded on a HD or Radar24 system at much higher sample rates. Can I use those .wav files in the higher sample for mixing/editing on my PTLE system.

~Cheers~

So if you had a 002 session going on at 96khz and loaded the session on your buddies 001 system, it wouldn't work?
