Default How good are the Digi 002 preamps?? Should I get

I was wondering how good my digi002 preamps are, I have the control surface. Should I invest in a high quality preamp? If so, which one?

I actually don't mind the preamps on the digi002, they are quite clear and they are pretty receptive and accurate in the sample by sample capture through their A/Ds. Their preamp is nearly noiseless, and besides that a little noise can give an analogue quality to your mix which can be benificial. What you have to think about is how many pres you require. You might wanna consider a focusrite platinum octopre with lightpipe Adat option card giving you 12 preamps to work with. Its totally about what you wanna use it for.

Cheers

The 002 pre's are very clear, very hot, and not very versatile (no pad to accompany their extreme "hotness"). A second pre to compliment the setup is a good idea. The 002 pre's are actually used quite often on my 002 rig, but having others is a must (I wouldn't dream of tracking drums with them).

The Octopre or the Digimax are great additions because of the light pipe. It gives you 8 more pre's and uses the light pipe input. I like my Octopre Mic Pres'.

If you want something a little more high end there is a cool mic pre kit out that is really high quality. Two channels for under $700. Here is a link if you want to check it out. You'll have to solder and put it together but it'll stand up to any high end mic pre out there. There is a tube and a solid state kit.

Hamptone Mic Pre
