Default Help me decide if and how to upgrade my computer

I recently purchased a Profire 2626 and Pro Tools 8. I've been having trouble running anything more than a few tracks without any plug-ins. I didn't have this problem with 7.x and my mbox, but I'm OK with upgrading my computer.

  • I don't want to feel limited in my tracking and plug-ins until I get up there. 8-10 tracks with EQ and compression on each along with some reverb auxiliary tracks, some midi, etc, should be the use case we're aiming for. Usually it will be significantly less than that, but sometimes it will be more.
  • I'd like to spend ~$300 for a processor and motherboard combo that can use the memory I currently own. If that's not possible with my use-case, just let me know what is.

Here's my current Sandra Report:

Default Re: Help me decide if and how to upgrade my computer

Joshua,

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but your computer is pretty underpowered in many respects for trying to run PTMP 8. In my opinion, I wouldn't spend any more money on your current computer. Use your M-Box and 7.4 until you can save enough money to build a new computer.

Read the i7 thread (it is very long) in the PTLE section to see what will work. You need more CPU, more and faster memory, hard drives with 32 MB cache and run at 7200 rpm, etc.

Good Luck,
Greg

Default Re: Help me decide if and how to upgrade my computer

Greg: Thanks for the information. For now I'm looking at upgrading the processor and motherboard:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 Yorkfield 2.5GHz
Motherboard: ASUS P5Q Pro Turbo

I could do the memory at the same time if necessary, but do you think for now I could get by just by upgrading these two? I can count on doing memory and the hard-drive at a future date.
