can't record enable/newbie

i am trying to record, but every time i hit the record button i get the following message "the track could not be record enabled because it doesn't have both active input and outputs assigned."
i have gone to the i/o setup and i believe i have set everything up right.
please help.

each track needs an input and an output assigned. Input depends on where you've plugged in the source, output is usually the stereo 1-2 analog outs.

i believe i have assigned the inputs.
but the paths are still listed as inactive.

what's your equipment by the way?
and how is it setup?
what are you trying to record?

just trying to record some songs.
i actually think i figured it out just a little while ago.
i need to make some screen shots of the I/O setup so i remember what i did.

You shouldn't even have to touch the I/O setup screen, set it at defaults.
