Default ProTools ignores Limiter Ceiling

Hi everybody,

I recently went from the good old 7.4 to 11 and I'm stuck with a strange issue.

I have a project with a clicking sound (that is supposed to be there) in the original recording from the set.
So I told my waves L1 to cut those clicks at -0,1, after going through the AIR reverb. It didn't care at all, still 0,0 and clipping.
Well, maybe a minor glitch I thought, so I went down to -0,2...and even -1,0 - was still clipping at 0,0. Everything checked in the Master Fader.

Then I tried to send it to an Aux and put the Limiter on it. Same issue.

Same thing with maxim.

Both ways worked perfectly fine in 7.4 - what has changed?

Thanks in advance.

Is the Limiter the last insert in the chain? Anything after a limiter would cause clipping if the signal is too hot

I have heard that the internal mix bus had changed in PT 8 compared to 7 where in 8 0 meant absolute 0 so any thing above would cause clipping, in 7 you would have slightly more headroom so opening projects from earlier versions of Pro Tools would "sound" hotter. I could be wrong though.

Thanks for the answer. The limiter is the last plugin in the chain, automation is untouched.

Hi,

Are you sure your master fader is on 0.0

Or are you viewing input metering or output metering?

The l1 isn't a brick wall limiter either. Really high frequency transients get through sometimes.

As said make sure you are post fader metering.

If you post your session (without audio) we can check the routing etc.

Yes, the Master Fader is at 0.0

Output Monitoring. I even imported the bounced file and analyzed the peak via Gain-Tool (0.0 dBFS). In Premiere it was clipping as well.

Thanks for the offer about the session, I'll gladly get back to it in the next days. I just need to make a new session and be sure, there are no infos left to compromise the NDA.

@l1: Good to know, thanks. Which limiter would you define as a "brick wall" then? Then I could test it beforehand.

Based on your replies, this is an issue none of you experienced? So it's not a "feature"?

jfi: Is the ceiling of the maxim reliable? This one failed too.
