Default Weird white noise problem ..help !!!

I'm encountering a strange problem i can't seem to figure out...hopefully someone can help.
I recorded a live show ( 16 tracks, 48Khz 24 bits ) with my PT HD2 rig and PT 6, took it home played back fine. I transfered it on my Laptop using PT 7 M-Powered for some editing, resave it as a PT 6 session, took it back to my studio and kep tworking from there on with my HD2 PT6 rig. Everything was fine until i started encountering burst of white noise. I close the session and stated PT again, this seems to fix the problem..but the problem seems to occur more often to a point where i have to close-open session every 5 min. Help...anyone ???

PS...i did all the normal procedure from trashing all prferences to reinstalling PT 6. The only thing i can think of right now is PT 7 M-Powered to PT6 is the problem.

We have this exact same issue, as you described however we don't use m-powered. we track using either HD-3's on 7.1 or TDM rigs on 6.4 and have the same EXTREME bursts of white noise across multiple and random tracks.
It has become so bad that we have been forced to look for an alternative software for our live recording.

white noise usually is an indicator of drive failure (or lack of bandwidth) of some type

I'm using Lacie Firewire drive, tried FW400 and 800....both giving the same problem....In the past, I have edited 48+ tracks session on these drives with no problem.

We have 18 x Segate 250 Gig 7200 8mg cache audio drives that are in cady's for the U6 SoHo Tanks
Our recording sessions vary from a minimum of 4 tracks to around 64 tracks.
When we have a job that requires more than 32 tracks, i will split the record disk allocation to two drives.

The amount of tracks doesn't seem to corolate to the white noise issue for us, as we still get it with sessions containing only 4 tracks.

Would anyone possibly be interested in allow us to test this out using one of your drives?

We can offer a loaner drive to use in the meantime.

i have had this problem as well from time to time. the bursts on my rig, however are not random. they occur mostly on fades or bits of audio which do seem random at first, but the bursts are always at the same spots until the problem is corrected. in other words, maybe a 1 second fade at some point in the song will go bad, but you can count on the burst occuring at that fade everytime until the problem is resolved.

re-strting does clear up the problem here. it's as if the ram or something gets maxxed out, or the song loses contact with the soundfile, and needs to be cleared. on the positive side, it's never permanently affected any files here, it just scares the hell out of you when the burst happens.

Are any of you using Waves SSL? I have had issues with the E-Channel dynamics creating a white-noise type distortion over the top of the audio. Dont know why or how, but just a few sessions have done this. Moving the ratio knob fixes the issue. Might save you buying a new hard drive...

Has anyone tried swapping out RAM? I've seen this problem be caused by bad RAM...

Problem solved...in my case it was the drive....after transfering the original session onto another drive, everything is good so far. Thanks everyone.
