Default Digi 001 & non-ASIO 3rd party apps?

a friend of mine installed an 001 system on his B&W G3/300, OS 8.6, but he can't seem to get non-ASIO apps to play through the 001... namely, recycle and metasynth. cubase and peak 2.1 work fine because they use the ASIO driver

there doesn't seem to be any way to change the sound manager output to the 001's output, either - is there something i'm missing here?
he installed the direct I/O extension but it didn't seem to do any good. any advice would be greatly appreciated..thanks
