Default Question to G4 QS users: maximum IDE ATA drive size in

Hi,
I decided to buy a 300GB IDE ATA for my G4 800 Quicksilver (bought on MAy, 2002) and realized it only formats up to 137GB (128GB).
I read some links that it might be a limitation of OS 9.2.2. or...

I´ve got this info:
Not all Macintosh products can take advantage of the full capacity of large (128 GB or greater) hard drives that use 48-bit LBA when they are connected via an ATA controller. Other controllers (SCSI or FireWire) are not affected.

There are two primary requirements that must be met for higher capacity hard drives to be fully utilized within a computer.

1. The computer must have Mac OS X 10.2 or later.
2. The computer must provide support for the drives via the BootROM.

Also:
Some controllers have that limitation, but it can be overriden in
software. I don't recall where the dividing line is for Macs, but I
put a 250GB drive into an iMac DV+ (Summer 2000) and needed to
download third-party drivers for it: http://www.speedtools.com

Has anyone else had any size limitation when going 10.3 for example?
HAs Apple released any 9.2.2 version that cures this limitation? I might go with 10.3 or install the drives as firewire.

Thanks

Hi Alécio.
I had that machine. Its the ata controller that does not support higher capacities, be it in os 9 or x. I had to purchase a SIIG pci card.
If there is a sofware that can override this, I dont know.
Once you get it to work, I would recomend creating 2 partitions, and use the first to work and the second to store files that you are not using. Otherwise you may end up using the fastest part of the drive with forgoten files. Unless of course you are geting into a 300 gb proyect.

Thanks, Pepo.
The info at the apple site got me amazed. If the installation of 10.2 or later solves this limitation to all G4 series or only to the G4 MDD machines. Anyone else?

thanks

If one PCI slot of your QS is still available, I highly recommend this

http://store1.sonnettech.com/product...dc0eb46d4a0da4

The internal ATA bus of G4 QS got "138G barrier" but this Sonnet card will show your internal drive as 300GB. (OS9,OSX)
If no more PCI slot is available, I would buy OWC FW400 enclosure to put in the drive.
The internal ATA bus of G4 MDD does not have "138GB Barrier" issue.
