Default PT11 HD (from PT10 + CPTK upgrade) - can I drop in an HDX card?

Hi all,

Apologies is this has already been asked and answered, but I searched and couldn't find anything...

I currently own PT11 HD software (from the PT 10 + CPK to PT11 HD $599 upgrade) that I'm running with an RME RayDAT card. I've seen some fairly inexpensive HDX cards on eBay, Craigslist, etc. If I obtain an HDX card and an HD interface (like an HD Omni) and replace the RME card with the HDX card + interface, ummm... will it work?

The reason I ask is because *new* HDX cards (alone) include this note: "Note: Avid HDX cards are available ONLY to registered Pro Tools|HDX owners or as an addition to a new system at the time of configuration. You must provide proof of eligibility to purchase this item." (link: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/PTHDXcard/) If I buy a used HDX card there wouldn't be the purchase barrier in place, but is there some other technical guard/check that I might encounter when getting the system running? My guess is "No, it will work fine." but it's an expensive proposition, which is why I'm looking for experience from someone that may have already done this, etc.

Many thanks in advance!

Brian

ps- Sorry if this isn't the correct forum. I couldn't find an obvious forum selection for this topic. Mods, please move this if needed.

I can't see any reason for this not to work. Worst case, you might need to install drivers for the card, or just run a new install of Pro Tools.

I agree. I don't see why it shouldn't work. I'm tempted to pick up a second hand HD|N card and interface, if I upgrade my CPTK license to HD11. The ability to go that way is about the only reason I can see myself upgrading to HD.

Long story short, while I've not done it, from what I've gathered you should be good to go.

It won't be a problem. The product you're looking at is actually an HDX card for people who already have an HDX system, and want to expand it. A dealer is not authorized to sell that card unless the person can prove they already have an HDX system (because Avid wants to make sure that HDX systems are sold as systems, with hardware and software). So that's why that warning is there. But there's not going to be anything that prevents you from using it if you have the HD software license.

What you're seeing on Ebay is probably someone who bought an HDX system, and is selling the pieces separately. An authorized Avid dealer can't do this, but Avid can't really stop individuals from doing it.

Hey guys,

I just wanted to close the loop on this. I scored an HDX card, popped it into a Mac Pro, connected some 192s that I got used - and Pro Tools 11 HD is up and running perfectly. Rawk. :)

Cheers,

Brian

Hey - I have a question - since PT11 (not HD) will work with any audio interface, can you use PT11 with a HD unit .. older or new?

11 will not use a HD card via Core Audio/ASIO Driver

All HDX cards are identical, no more core and process cards. If you have a HD10/HD11 license, it will work with any HDX card.
