Default recording acoustic guitar

Hi guys -

I'm using a Dan Alexander pre (neve) and an audio technica 3031 to record acoustic guitar. AT at 12th fret, sometimes Rode NT1-a at bridge. Sound is pretty nice, but I don't seem to be getting gobs of signal. I have to turn up the preamp quite a bit, and I think I'm hearing a slight distortion.

Suggestions? Should I use a different pre? Different mic? Turn up signal at compressor? (FMR RNC) Is that just the way it is?

Also, I couldn't find on this forum anywhere any discussion about recording acoustic guitar. I'd love to hear what people do.

Thanks!

Hey juicytunes,
I hope this isn't obvious, but is your pre plugged in to the "DI" instead of "mic" input? And is "DI" selected on the ..........MBox/00x...? I don't remember how the double-0 stuff handles that, but the Mbox2 has a switch for DI/Mic. You should need little to no gain from the MBox in DI mode.
I hope this ain't garbled,
I should be in bed

Arneal - Thanks for the reply.

I have the first mbox. Yes, I know to put it on line level.... however, there is a chance it missed it this last session and left it on mic... that's the default. I'll double check on the next session. Thanks for the input.

I'd still love to hear how people record acoustic guitar.

Thanks!

i recorded an acoustic guitar about a month ago and heres what i did, i used a pair of AKG 451's in a coincident pair about a foot away from the player around the 12th fret. i also used a rode NT 2000 at the soundhole, about 2 inches away, aimed at it from the bridge. i also used a blue kiwi as an over-the-shoulder techniques. hope this helps.

Guys, thanks for the responses. I found the issue. I had a problem with one of my speakers when playing back on computer.

Carry on..
