Default anyone happy with PRE

Let's talk about digi PRE.
I'm using it since 4 days in several live situations together with HD. Couldn't go back to the studio and listen back. I'm so far quite impressed.

well since I got my API everything else has sounded like crap. I sometimes wish I had never bought it, because now I won't be satisfied until I have 24 channels of it

I hope the pre ends up sounding good, however, since the API I really love the slightly colored (enhanced) effect, and I seldom use any totaly clean pre's for digital recording anymore.

Spong:

Which API do you have and what was your source in obtaining it? Can you compare your API's to the Neve 1272 for color or character?

The prior "clicking" thread seemed to yield that the Digi Pre was a good preamp for a neutral unbiased sound. I didn't get the sense that observers found it cold, thin, or britttle.

The API unit I have is the 4 channel 3124+ and I got it from Washington Professional services in Wheaton MD.

I have never had a chance to A/B the API against a Neve 1272, however, from what I understand, the neve is darker and the API slightly brighter. I am also considering a seventhcircle 8 channel preamp bassed on the 1272.

see the link, damn cheap too.

However, the recording quality and sound I have achieved with the API's are astounding and the 1272 would have to be bloody good for me to buy it as an alternative.

I tested the Digi Pre for a good week in my studio. I had it controled from a procontrol wich by the way was the ONLY cool thing about it. Any ways, I tested it with Neve1073s,Avalon737,APIs,Calrec and Focusrite, all sounded better than the digi pre. I did several tests over a week and did not like any sounds I got out of it. I was going to get one but not any more, It just sounded thiner than the others. Hope you all can demo one also and see for your self how it sounds.

Don't you have a whole rack of Averill 1073's there at the Firehouse? How's that working out for you in the all-digital environment. Are they just as groovy going to PTHD as they are going to tape?

protooleo remember that the Digi Pre comes to like $230 per channel so you are comparing to pre's that cost Way more...Im more curious how it compares to something like the Sytek which is slightly cheaper than the Digi Pre per channel...I think you can pick up the 4 channel for $750...anyone want to compare the two? Also the RNP is coming out in a couple of weeks and thta should be about the same price per channel as well...
