Default Are you Happy with Your 002??

Hey all,

well i have saved most of th emoney... but i am scared to take the plunge.
Its time to purchase the powerplant for my LE Rig, and I am wondering how happy LE users are with their Powermac G5.

PLEASE PLEASE leave me some feedback on how your rig runs... i don't want to spend all this money and be dealing with bugs bugs bugs that i could avoid with a G4 Dual 1.42

Thank you very much all,
This could really help me in my desicion

I run my 002 on a dual 867 G4, and I don't have problems. Sure, I can't run a whole lot of waves linear phase stuff, and i need to get creative with delays and reverbs, but i frequently run 20+ tracks at 44.1/24 Bit, with eq's and comps on just about every track. A few sends here, a delay there, maybe a reverb somewhere, I usually have enough horsepower to get by without audio suiting things. If you do a search on the duc, i think you'll find that a lot of people swear that the dual 1.42 G4 is one of the best computers for protools le.

I am running PT 6.4 w/ 002R on G5 Dual 1.8 OS10.3.4

I have had a great deal of problems with this set up. First of all, the midi doesn't seem to work very well with the 002R. Also my external Fire Wire drives won't play back or record audio, only archive. I thought the whole point was to use Fire Wire. Frequent crashes and I mean frequent.

Digidesign and Apple are unable to figure out the problem. I suspect both are to blame but my blame leans toward the G5. Apple has made some significant architectural changes inside, including the AC power supply, the Fire Wire bus (I think it is all routed through an 800 bus which would explain possibly the problems with the Fire Wire drives), and even the PCI slots are newer and incompatible with certain older PCI cards.

Hope this helps, because Digidesign and Apple want to point their fingers at everyone else.

Find a system that works for you and stick with it...

Good luck, you'll need it. : confused:

I think the dual 1.8's have normal PCI slots, only the 2's and 2.5's have PCI-X. Don't quote me on that though...

I'm running a 002 with an extra 200gb internal drive and it works like a charm, my setup is solid as a rock except for some wierd plugin issues... look for that post in this forum if you want to hear more... I would put the blame on digidesign personaly, how long have the G5's been out now? Digi only recently officialy approved a G5 for use with PTLE. Let alone any kind of native code. I always bitch about that though... don't mind me.

I just got into a PTLE setup for the first time, and coming from a PC with a Layla and Cool Edit Pro it's obviously quite a change.
I have a dual 2.0 G5 with latest OSX etc...
and an 002R, and a Command 8...
I have only had a couple of crashes, but in general it runs really well.
I like having the Command 8/002R combination over the 002 as well.

I have a dual 2 G5 , 3gigs RAM, a mbox, motu mtpav and a metric halo card I use as my converters and go through spdif to my mbox. I have 2 250 gig internal drives and one 400 gig on a RAID card which won't work for pt but I need for Final cut. It works like a charm. I have over 17 waves plugins, tons of tracks, and sends. There are always things you need to know hoo to deal with but once you figure them out and maintain a very clean drive...it'll will work great. You need to have a dedicated drive for audio...and I don't know about firewire but I can imagine a fragmented firewire drive and the bottle neck of firewire alone....I'd stick with a dedicated SATA internal drive. Defrag your drive regularily. I partition my system drive into three sections-osx for system stuff, user for user things like docs, mp3s etc, and a third for storage stuff or stuff I download...like a depot. This way my system drive never gets anything added to it (I set all my browser dowloads to download to my storage drive). I have had great succeess with this set up. And for those who say Panther degrags for you are full of s#*t. Any time you put a file somehwere and remove it your disk gets fragmented. That is one of the major cause of slow computers. When you get up and running, make sure you set your processor performance to highest in the energy setting page under options in your system prefs. Then set your CPU use to 99% in protools. You'll be happy you did.

So good luck.

Can't say this enough...SATA is FASTER than FIREWIRE!!!!

Using FireWire instead of internal on a G5 is a waste of resources.

Hi Guys,

I hear you all talk about SATA drives. What size and make is best? Are these drives
internal? DO they fit G4 as well as G5? Partition or not?
Thanks

Hotso
