Question Pro Tools 8 and G5 Users Update?

Hey all,

Checking back in to see how things are going for those running 8 on G5 machines, particularly... dual processor G5's?

I'm running a dual 1.8 G5 and PT7 (HD) has run flawlessly for me. I run PT8 at work, and am getting used to the functionality and am wondering again if it's time to make the switch at home.

Problem is, when 8 first hit... I was told that G5 users were having all sorts of issues and basically warned not to upgrade. Since I'm using old cards, a new Mac isn't really an option without scrapping my whole system and starting over.

So, just checking in for the latest updates on how people may (or may not) be doing. Any advice or descriptions of your experience is appreciated!

Hmmm, so far so good.

Did either of you notice any stability improvements with the updates? Perhaps it was more of a v.1 problem? (The issues I was hearing about.)

This good news!

I did an install a couple of weeks ago of Leopard and then PT 8 on a partition of my second drive.

I only played around with it for an hour or so with no issues. However, I am yet to really dive in with a session.

By the way as a PT newbie I experienced my first Pro Tools freeze this week. Not Digi/Avids' fault it was the SSL Duende I have been testing.

I have 2 G5 systems working fine with PT8cs3. One PCIx and one PCIe. I run 10.5.8 in them. I tried 8.0.1 in my G5 4*2,5 and it worked fine. I missed Atmosphere and Trilogy though so I went back to 8.0cs3.

Working here....
2x systems with DP 2.0 4GB Ram 10.5.8 PT's 8.0.1 HD3accell
everything works fine up to 48khz
when going to 88 or 96 the system is starting to suffer
not happy with RATS at all, actually I hardly use them- I do all the VI's work in Logic 9.
When using Drumagog and or Melodyne I have to bounce.

The 2nd drive thing is the way to go. I can always retain my old system that way.

Good to hear people doing well with it. I think the original concern revolved around 8 (in theory) being designed for the newer chip-sets and hence not compatible with the "old" pre-intel stuff.

Hoping that's not the case, and it's sounding promising.

We've got 5-PTHD systems all running 8.0.1. 4-Systems are on dual-2GHz G5s, dating from late 2003, that are all currently running Leopard 10.5.8. We've had no issues whatsoever. Of course, 8.0.1 will be the last version you can run on a non-Intel box, so upgrades out of the G5s are going to be REAL expensive since the HD cards must be updated as well.

BTW, our 5th system is an HD4 running on Windows.... don't ask why I decided to do that! It made sense at the time.
