Default Censoring for radio

What is the best method of modifying a vocal to keep it clean for radio, without destroying the recording?

Create a new Session titled "blah blah Censored"
Import all of the session data from the original session.

Go to a piece of foul language, select the waveform with your selector tool.
Go to audiosuite, other, signal generator, select 1kHz, click "process"

That should replace the foul language with a beep tone instead of the word.

use "gain" in audiosuite to process your beep to an appropriate level, and make sure you fade the beep in and out like 20-30ms.

I haven't done it before, but thats how I would if I had to.

You can also simply save the session under a different name and then work on censoring. The original session will be unaffected by editing done in the new session.

Although I've often used the 1kHz tone method described above, one newer technique I've become fond of is simply reversing the word. Highlight the waveform of the offending word, seperate it as a region, then simply use the "Reverse" plug-in in Audio Suite. Another similar technique is to find another word approximately the same length, capture that word as a region and put it in the timeline over the offending word. Then reverse it. This works well for speech, though not always for music because it can briefly bee off pitch. I have, however, used for music for single syllable profanities.

Matt, the "reverse method" sounds like a cool one.

I think the funniest method I have heard is in "Fire Water Burn" By Blood Hound gang where they use the sound of a Donkey to replace the censored words.

I think I heard gunshots used in place of profanity on a hip hop album once. Can't remember which tho.
