Default DigiSystem INIT a necessary Extension with PT 5.3?

I am trying to solve a Pro Tools freeze-up problem by re-installing Pro Tools 5.3 on my G4 867 (with OS 9.2).
I am reinstalling from the 5.3 CD.

The Answerbase lists the Extensions that should be installed with PT 5.x:

When I search after reinstallation, I find no DigiSystem INIT in extensions.
Is this a problem?
If so, what do I do?

You can drag the Digisystem INIT from the 'System Folder Items' folder on the CD to the Extensions folder in the System Folder on your main hard drive.

Will do. Thanks!

Is it essential for it to be in place for proper operation, or is it optional?
Could it's absence be causing me problems?

I'm not sure, but I believe Pro Tools 5.3 for HD systems might have been the first release that did not use the DigiSystem INIT file. If it were required for Pro Tools 5.3, and was not present, Pro Tools would not be able to launch. The file structure changed at some point, and that might have been with that release. (I'm not able to check right now)

In any case, I would install Pro Tools 5.3 from your CD, then update to 5.3.1, then 5.3.1r2, both available here:
