What\'s the best G4 to buy for PT LE Digi 002???
Hello all, Im in a crunch. I don't know which Mac to get. Is the dual 1.25 cpu a good buy? Will I see a big difference between that and a single 1.25 cpu for Digi 002???

I havent used the single processor 1.25 but I do have the dual...It's a Monster! I swear I cant concieve all the power sitting between my legs....Many verbs, many waves, and tons of McDsp filterbanks...I've been in heaven for the last 2 months!

I have the dual 1.25 and I second that notion from Ca Ca, but I have a new toy, a 12" PB and it runs PT's 6.1/Reason just perfect as well........it gives me plenty of power too, I think any Power Mac G4 will give you plenty of power for what you need. Whatever you do getting a G4 or G5 will be a good decision!

Re: What\'s the best G4 to buy for PT LE Digi 002???
I've been running my 002 with a 12" 867 G4 PB w/640 meg ram.
It's OK for cutting...not enough for complex mixing. In fact I still get CPU interrupts while recording with very few plugs. Add a reverb and things really slow down. Add one or two Waves mastering plugs....forget about it. This performance is slightly better than that I was getting on my 600 mhz iBook w/640 meg ram. The 12" PB is a good but limited "on the go" recording scenario. Would a dual 1.25 G4 be significantly better? I should mention that I have an HD3 and a Mix3 system. Will I never be satisfied with the limititations of a native Pro Tools setup? |

I should mention that most of my interrupts occur while recording at 96K.

Re: What\'s the best G4 to buy for PT LE Digi 002???
When alot of people switched to the G4 dual 1.25Ghz machines, it was one of the few times I've seen performance actually double with PTLE from the single processor systems. Dual is the way to go with 6.1 especially when running rewire plugin and programs like Reason in the background. I think you would be dissapointed with a single processor unit in either the PB or G4 tower. The last thing you want in a big session is to run out of power. You can bet that programs are just going to get more taxing on the CPU in the near future.
Personally, for the extra upgrade cost, I'd be getting a G5 dual myself. Allen |
