Default Virtual Sample Player and 96K

A simple question, What happens with virtual instruments running at 96K?
Probabily that virtual synths can work at 96k by generating the sound at this freq.
but what happens with sample player with libraries sampled at 44.1 (like VSL etc.)?
IS it possible that the player converts the samples in real time? I think it's very hard.
