"it''s supposed to be 2.5 db quieter panned centre?"

Yes.

If you want to go to (the now standard) version of -3dB pan law, go to your plugins folder and and remove the stereo mixer plugin (just move it to your unused plugins folder.) Better yet, remove both the stereo mixer plugin and the surround mixer plugin and put the surround dither mixer plugin, which is in your unused plugins folder, back into the regular plugin folder.

That's how we used to change the panning law back then. Despite the naming (stereo and surround) for those plugins, if the stereo mixer plugin is missing from the plugin folder and only the surround is there, it uses the surround plugin for stereo busses also with its -3dB pan law. The dither mixer is the better one (with an explanation I'm not going to bore everyone with.)

Modern Pro Tools versions, (PT11 and later) standardized to -3dB by default (though that is now changeable in the session setup) and always with a dithered mixer.

For anyone interested, there is excellent white page published by DigiDesign, about 48-bit TDM mixer and dithering. Too busy now to find a link but should not be hard to find.
