Default CLAP - New Audio Plugin Standard

Bitwig and uHe have announced the creation of a new audio standard which they think will replace the VST standard. Its called "Clever Audio Plugin" or CLAP.

Anyone heard of this? Thoughts? Reactions? Implications?

Never heard of it, thanks for the info.

But no matter how good it may be, it won't become a standard until many DAWs adopt it. And then you need the big players in the plugin world to offer it.

When you see Waves offering AAX, VST, AU, and CLAP, then it will be a standard. Plus it will give them a reason to charge for another WUP upgrade

Like Waves or not, they are the biggest player in the pro plugin world.

Time will tell.

Amused Avid is listed under the "Companies and Projects to Watch Out For"

Because Avid has notoriously ever strayed from their own plugin format during the entire history of the company

But the biggest thing is the "thread pooling" management seems like a significant re-write for plugin hosts. And I don't think either Cubase/Nuendo or Logic will have do such a re-write (or even Studio One.) So a format is mostly DOA if the big "two" won't adopt.

It will be interesting to see who adopts the standard. From what little info is out there on this, it does sound like a major over-haul of the plugin format. But it it works as advertised, you could see some of the major players, like Waves, jump on board quickly.

Doesn't matter if plug developers jump in.
If the only DAW that will run them is bitwig, it's dead.
This isn't a tail-wagging-the-dog situation.
