Be sure to check in the 'Session Setup Window', that sync is set to 'internal'...
That's all I can think of right now...

Dear quisco,

I use a G4/sawtooth 400 Mhz with 256 Mb RAM and recently I have exactly the same problem:
a loud digital "tick" followed by complete or partial silence of the tracks. The tracks do show metering, but they produce no sound anymore. Closing the session and opening again helps for about 5 minutes, but then the problem appears again (This tick can really ruin your expensive monitorspeakers!!!).

I don't seem to do anything special. I have used a lot of plugins and tracks before, but the only thing i could possibly get was a DAE error, but this is different!

Ofcourse I tried reinstalling Pro Tools and running it with a minimum set of extensions but nothing helped.

I searched the digidesign site thoroughly but not a word about it. I wish someone from Digidesign reads this and has an answer to our problem!!

Greets, Dan.

Dear DanXx
Finally I´ve found a solution at this problem . I´ve tested the loud clip only appears when I attached an external scsi Zip drive to the scsi port of my G3 266/190 beige Os 9.
What kind of gear do you use?
Have you installed an external drive?
Are you using a removal unit?
Thanks.

yo danxx, i have the same exact problem. i thought my amp shut down in my monitors... i cac reboot and all is well for a minute then...pop... no more sound, just meters and transport playing. the only luck ive had is removing plugins. this seems to fix it. but you are right, we should get the error window. i wish digi would answer this. by the way i only have an internal zip, which i dont use. my system is a B&WG3/300.

Hi all,

Thanks for the response.

My stuff:

400 Mhz sawtooth (AGP graphics)
256 Mb RAM
zipdrive (but this is standard on sawtooth)
Adaptec 2904 SCSI card (narrow)

I just tried running my computer with a MINIMUM set of extensions (even less than Mac OS base!), turning off Adaptec SCSI extension and the drivers for my Zip (amongst a lot of other things) but the problem stays the same!

I think it has something to do with the RTAS plugins, that they're buggy. Digidesign should take a look at it. And if it's hard for them to track (because of unpredictability) I am willing to give my "problem"-session to them, because with this one, it ALWAYS happens.

I even copied the exact line-up of plugins (and their presets) to another session and I got exactly the same problem.

I think I tried everything! Now I'm almost going to phsically remove my SCSI card... but maybe that's a bit overdone...

Digidesign, help!

Greets, Dan.

Hi all,

BTW: I forgot to tell that I record my audio on the internal ATA 66 drive (Digidesign approves of this).
My Adaptec 2904 narrow-SCSI interface is only for burning CD's.

I had the same problem this weekend, and found that removing plug-ins also seemed to help the problem. Bussing a submix of three or four tracks to a stereo aux track really seemed to be the culprit to me, whenever I removed the plug-in (in this case Waves TrueVerb), or deleted the aux channel altogether - no problem on playback. I got both types of problems - loud clipped distorted signals, followed by/alternating with zero audio on playback, with all meters showing signals. Any other ideas out there?

Frank gave you a good clue for narrowing down this or any problem. You gotta break it down.

* trash the digisetup file as well as the DAE prefs folder and the waves preferences (located in the system folder/preferences folder). Restart and try the session again. did it fix it? If not -

Make a copy of the session and then "working from the copy" take the plugings off of the tracks. Start with waves and go from there. Try it after you take the plugins out and see if the problem persists. This is only to see if we can track down the culprit.

If you want to do this quicky then just go to DAE folder/plugins folder and take out all the plugins except for the 16 or 24 bit optimized mixer plugin and also leave the waveshell. Relaunch pro tools and open the COPY of the session and see if the problem persists. If it does then quit PT and go back to DAE folder and take out the waveshell and relaunch the session. This time there will be no plugins. Did the problem go away?

Thanks B Carter for your reply and interest in this topic!

Sorry for my late reaction but here it comes:

- I tried trashing the digisetup file and the DAE prefs (I don't use Waves plugins) but it didn't help.

- By taking the plugins out one by one I quickly had good results: the problem stopped as soon as the processorload dropped significantly (by taking out a D-Verb for example). So the problem seems to have a relation with processorload.

- When I took out all the plugins from the DAE folder (I don't have 16 and 24-bit optimized mixer plugins, I use PT LE) the problem didn't appear either. So this problem has to do with the plugins.

But last night I was working on a session when a 1-band EQ started to behave a little strange: It randomly gave large boosts in the lower frequencies. And then I remembered that my "clicking"-problems also started with something similar (but that time with a 4-band EQ). So could it be the EQ's?

That's what I have for now.. I hope you guys can come up with a solution for this in the near future.

Greets! Dan.
