Default Is it safe (enough) to jump from Mojave to Catalina?

Catalina has been a big change for the Mac. Big for ProTools. I'd be ok experimenting with an upgrade from Mojave to Catalina on a test machine but the one I'd be experimenting on is busy with critical work.

The conservative approach would be to stay put. But for reasons I'd rather not mention here it could be smart for me to upgrade to Catalina in order to fix some other issues.

So, the basic question: is it safe to upgrade from Mojave to Catalina for HD users, assuming I'd be using the latest OS and latest PT?

I'd feel OK as long as you don't have video issues.

But don't upgrade... spin up a new clean macOS install on a container... or if you *really* have to clone your boot drive to a new container and in-situ upgrade that. Hopefully you have enough space on the boot SSD or another drive.

If you are keeping your Photos / Music libraries on your main system, you need to do upgrade first to let the libraries update to the new format. Once done, either copy them to external drive or rely on iCloud Backup. Either way, once your libraries are done, as said, clean install is the way to go.

You can also just point Catalina’s Music and Photos at your old iTunes and Photos Libraries on the old partition and import them. Music and Podcast apps are an improvement in Catalina.

Working really great here for me. But like Darryl said, a clean install with save you some headaches.

Upgrade was a general term. The actual installation would be from scratch.

Surely many plugins are still not Catalina compatible?

It seems as it some may never make the cut?

Any plugs that don't make the cut to Catalina let alone Big Sur won't be long for the Mac anyway.

I wouldn't change a production machine to Catalina right now.

Why? What's the advantage of Catalina over Mojave? I can't think of one.

Am I missing something?

Catalina actually runs much smoother than Mojave, because old baggage is gone
