Default Renaming Regions

Does anyone know why sometimes, when renaming a region, I will be offered the choice of renaming the region alone or the region and the disk file, yet other times (sometimes within the same session!) I just get to rename the region itself?

It's so useful to be able to rename the file on disk from within the session and not have to worry about PT losing the file because of renaming outside of the program. I'd just like to know how to ensure I can do this whenever I like.

Thanking you

Sonny

Name Region Only and Name Region and Disk File options are only available when renaming whole-file regions.

If the region name is listed in the Region List in bold it means the region contains all the sound file audio data.
If so, you can change both the region and sound file name... otherwise only the region name.

Thanks buds.

Why does this not work for a consolidated file though? I thought that consolidating makes PT write a whole new file on the disk, but I'm still unable to rename in this way.

Use the Grabber tool, double click on your consolidated region in the edit window and rename it.

Indeed, however it was the failure of this technique that prompted my post.

I do try to do as much troubleshooting as possible myself before even thinking about wasting anyone's screen space here.

...I should really go to bed.

Nope, that's it. If you guys call it then I'm checking it.

Booting up now - unconsciousness be damned!

I shall report back momentarily...(no doubt with my tail between my legs).

*saunters into DUC, whistling nonchalantly, looking innocent*

So, er, yeah...can't seem to repeat the problem. Everything seems to be working just as you all calmly stated. Oh well, I'll be danged if I can think of what was going on with it/me before. Probably the fact that it was at the end of one of those really long sessions where your eyes start watering at the screen.

Honestly though, I swear this is the way the universe works - it's happened to me and so many people I know with such regularity that I can actually count on it as part of problem solving, especially with technology.

This is how it works; when something technologically complicated is not working the way you believe it should - particularly if it's a task that should be performed with no problems or something that you have known it to do on a regular basis with no glitches - then calmly go through every bit of your knowledge to address and solve the problem. Pull apart every facet of what could possibly affect the fault, double check every variation and, of course, RTFM.

Then, and only then, when you are satisfied that there is some kind of gremlin at work and there is a genuine, mysterious problem intrinsic to the system, find the most technologically knowledgable and talented person you can who you can call upon to witness said issue in action.

Now simply watch in humbled, shrivelling embarrassment as the problem instantly and without trace disappears under the amused gaze of your onlooker. Problem solved!

(Please note that this will only work if you are 100% positive that you have tried everything under the sun to allieviate the problem and are completely convinced of the absolute certainty of the glitch).

I have been both the exasperated victim and the tickled witness in this situation so frequently that it has genuinely become both a joke and a way to get stuff working around our way.

Thanks for all your help, friends,

Sonny

(Definately, definately going to bed now)

P.S. I just thought, maybe this is why you're having those tempo glitches in 7.1 Shane...all you need do is find someone who knows more about Pro Tools than you to come and watch you do it. This may be why your problem's not going to go away any time soon.
