Default Mbox 3 possible defective device??

Hi All,

I have recently purchased an mbox 3.

I am using it to connect my electric guitar to my laptop.

My laptop specs are as follows:
Win 7 64bit
8gig ddr III
i7 @ 2.0ghz

The device seems to function correctly until I set the buffer to 128 on the 96000 sample rate.

After doing this and running the device into either Reaper DAW or Pro tools my system crashes after roughly 10 seconds or so.

A process called 'NT Kernel & System' runs up to 90/95% and just eats the CPU alive.

I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from the avid site.

Does anyone know what might be causing this issue? could it be a defective mbox unit?

Thanks

We would need to see your Sandra report to know for sure, but you may be asking a lot from a small computer to run a 128 buffer at 96KHz. How large are your sessions and are you running any VIs?

And please read this.

Hi again, My apologies, i was not aware that i needed to submit a system report, you can find it below :)

I am running amplitube 3 or TH2 VST's in reaper, however even if i run no VST's and simply open up either program the pc crashes and has to be reset. The sessions are very minimal, just the guitar into the VST.

First thing I see is that you don't have a separate qualified drive for your audio sessions and the system drive you're currently using is too slow (5400rpm).

Strike 1....^^
Strike 2....its a Dell(and they can be a crapshoot for Pro Tools)
Strike 3....Integrated graphics(usually a show stopper for Pro Tools)
Other things to consider, wifi should be disabled when running Pro Tools. Amp sims are serious resource hogs, so if you have more than 2 in your session, you should bus the processed sound to a new audio track, record it and make the original track inactive(freeing up the resources). Then there is Core Parking, so search youtube on how to check and change that feature. I'm not saying you can't get this setup to work, just pointing out some things you need to be aware of. You should also review and re-check all the required system setup tweaks(since you missed the separate recording drive detail, you may have also missed some others). Be methodical, take notes, and maybe you'll get a break

This is correct, especially if you are running at 96k.

You also are using integrated graphics in this computer. This will (or can) cause enormous problems.

I would suggest running at 48k and see what happens.

EDIT: I see albee has come in while I was typing, and as always, he has nailed it.

Default Re: Mbox 3 possible defective device??

Regards the hard drive, I am not recording, what I am doing is simply using my PC as a guitar effects processor with the mbox as an audio interface.

Unparking all 8 cores makes no difference.

Now for effects I am running amplitube 3 as a VST plugin in Reaper (or Pro tools), personally I prefer Reaper.

In terms of CPU usage, if I add literally every single effect and run amplitube in stereo with 2 different amp/cabinets (one per channel) my CPU usage does not go above 15% (and 15% is a bit of an exaggerated upper limit).

My integrated graphics card is what windows uses to run the aero theme, however I also have a built in nvidia GT525. I dont use it to run either DAW as the DAW interfaces are very smooth in fact both video cards have a 6.7 out of 7.5 windows experience rating, I mean they can run games like assassins creed 3 at ultra settings smoothly so they would not bottleneck the system.

Basically, the mbox works perfect at 256 and 512 bit latency with 96000 sampling rate. CPU usage is at 15% / 20% maximum on either.

256 bit gives me 4.1/4.1 latency, 512 gives 7.1/7.1.

I find it very strange that dropping the latency to 128 bit ends up using so much cpu that the pc literally freezes up and needs to be restarted. I am not exaggerating if i say that at 256 bit I can play guitar through the entire set-up, browse the internet, watch a movie and run photoshop and dreamweaver.

Then if i turn everything off and just set the latency to 128 the system freezes after 10 seconds.

My usb ports are 3.0.

To me it seems very strange. Again the process that hogs up the entire CPU is called 'NT Kernel & system'. It seems like some sort of driver error to me or faulty hardware as it seems strange that the pc literally freezez as opposed to just slowing down.

+ the negative jump in performance from 256 to 128 is 100X (again to the point of a total system hangup).

Please help me out here
