Default Quad G5 (PowerPC) with Pro Tools, is it ok???

Hi, can people confirm the Quad G5 is ok to use with PT.

I am not purchasing the new Intel macs because I don't think they are going to be that reliable at this time and, well they aren't proper macs really.

So, does anyone have PT working ok with the Quad G5 PowerPC 2.5Ghz?

Thanks

I don't know about pro-tools, but I can't wait to get one... And you better get used to them if you don't think they are real macs, asa i think they are here to stay

Yes - I recently used 7.1.2 with Mbox 2 Pro on my Quad G5 for a few days. It worked pretty well. I just returned the Mbox 2 Pro, but that's a different story.

I agree, the Intel Macs are real Macs, and the transition to Intel is moving along very smoothly.

think you guys got me the wrong way round

i'm actually interested in reliable, solid performance over speed. It took some studios a long time to change from OS9 over to OSX, so like these new macs, I reckon there will be studio engineers (definately HD/TDM guys) who will be staying with the PowerPC macs NOT the Intel macs for a couple of years from now at least.

I am not keen to get an Intel mac, even though software companies are moving along. Also with a TDM/HD rig (which I will likely purchase in a year or two) don't need a fast G5 cos it's mostly outboard gear doing the processing right? So all the more reason to go for the 'tried and tested' reliable PowerPC macs.

So my question, is again, are people running the PowerPC mac Quad G5 2.5ghz ok?

Thanks for your input guys

Yes, the Quad G5 works well for ProTools LE.

The transition from OS 9 to OSX was very different, involving a completely new approach to programming for the Mac. Conversely, OS X programming for the Intel Macs is unchanged, though hardwired dependencies on certain CPU characteristics need to be fixed.

I've been pretty happy running PTLE and Reason for the past few months, works great.

Yep. I'm one of those people who will stick with PPC for at least three years from now, because currently I cannot trust that Intel-based plugin code is stable enough. My system needs to be 100.00% stable because a lot of what I do is done live and in front of audience -- no hiccups, please.

Quad PowerMac would be my recommendation for anyone wanting to build a Protools rig.

It is not a Quad-only feature, it is in fact an issue with all multi-core systems. Quads are affected with this too. Everyone is waiting for the fix.
