Default High / Low sampling rate??

Any thoughts on recording sample rates? HD2 system using 96 I/O's

I can here a difference between 96K, and 44.1 or 48K, when working in 'Tools, but is there any point in recording at the higher rate if the final mix is going to be bounced to disk then burnt to CD using Toast?
We always record at 24 bit and normally use the L1 Ultramaximizer over the master tracks as the final dither processor.
Is it only worth it if youre taking the final product out to be mastered (as a session, or 96k stereo file)?

Hard drive space not a problem.

If your just doing it yourself I don't see much benefit in higher sample rates. If you are taking your mix to a real mastering studio I would say it's not a bad idea. I would ask the mastering engineer what he or she would like.

More and more DVD-A players are coming out.

Might as be ready for them.

I agree with macr0w that you might take it on a case by case basis depending on what you need at the time of recording.

I only record in 96/24 when I have some heavy duty processing to do. ie. Time stretch, heavy eq etc. Normal recordings, 48/16 for me. You won't convince me that the average Joe Blo can tell the difference. Especially with his average home Hi Fi.

There's too many inconsistencies involved for me to worry about running sessions at 96k. If I do run them at that rate, it's for my own personal pleasure in the studio. I like to hear a real natural sound if I have the disk space lying around. Especially on the drums. They sound practically orgasmic at higher rates.
