Hi

Since two days i have the new Quad Mac Mini Server with 16 GB Ram.
Protools 10.0.1 and CPK

I am able to load every session from the big room without error.
That is currently 205 Tracks with a lot of surround busses
Even with reduced cores to 5 everything runs very very smooth.

Graphics is absolutely fast enough. No 9xxx errors so far.
I did not deinstall the Server options. Just as it came!

Go for it. Works!!!

Ale

Having no problems now even with CPU up to 40% running tons and tons of plugins with quite a few tracks. I'm running PT 10 now though. Using 7 CPU's at 99%.

Posting my experience with a Mac Mini Server in case it is helpful to others.

I recently purchased a Mac Mini Server to run ProTools LE 8, after giving up on trying to get ProTools LE running stable on a Windows 7 64bit machine for over a year. I was getting frequent BSOD's (Blue Screen of Death) despite following all the Windows optimization recommendations from Avid. I purchased the 4GB Mac Mini Server listed for $999. (4GB RAM, 2GHz quad-core i7 CPUs, dual 500GB 7200 rpm hard drives.)

I was able to get ProTools LE 8.0.5 running on a Mac Mini Server running OS X Lion 10.7.3. I use a Digi 003 Rack+ interface to record my Hart Dynamics electronic drums using a Roland TDW-20 percussion sound module.

The only issue I can't seem to resolve, is the delay in opening a new ProTools session. When a open a new session, it gets hung on "Building Edit Window" and "Building Transport Window" for a few minutes. But then the session opens fine and everything works as normal. I've followed all the Mac optimization steps from Avid but still can't get that issue resolved. It's not showstopper for me... just annoying.

In any case, ProTools is running solid on my Mac Mini... with no OS crashes! My only tip during installation... since the mac mini does come with a cd/dvd drive, would be to copy the contents of the ProTools installation CD to a local drive before running the installer. I installed PT 8.0.4 first, then installed the 8.0.5 update before trying to launch PT.

I'll probably "crossgrade" to PT10 at some point. A $399 crossgrade charge seems a bit steep to me however.

new racking option http://www.sonnettech.com/product/xmacminiserver.html

it's a little short sided but a nice idea:
needs TB and FW port(s) on the front
options for mounting there media card reader and/or a SATA HD doc would have been brilliant (even if it made it 2ru)

Very cool, until I saw that the price is more than the computer. It's cool that it adds 2 Pcie slots to the mini, but for $1300 + the $1000 mac mini server, you might as well just get a mac pro so you have more room for internal drives.

If they could make this thing for $500 it would be a little more practical. It kind of reminds me of the old marathon rackmount enclosure that you could put the guts from a CRT G3 imac in, it's kind of cool, but just not cost effective.

However for a mobile rig that would be a nice way to go.

Does anyone know if the Lion SERVER update combo (10.7.4/5) has to be used ? when updating.
Or... Can the Lion CLIENT update combo (10.7.4/5) be used ?

If the Lion SERVER update combo has to be used, i,m just wondering if you have to reset/configure it all again...to turn of all Server functions etc

If anyone done this, or recently updated, can they chime in please.

I,m on 10.7.3 and running Pro Tools 10.2
I am wanting to go to Lion 10.7.4 and PT 10.3.2

Cheers
Jay

With new mac mini's announced today. It looks like the non server I7 ivy bridge quad core could be the new goto mini for PT users on a budget.

I noticed the new server model has 2x 1Tb 5200rpm drives rather than the 7200rpm drives of the previous generation, which is a shame. There's no option to upgrade the drives other than going SSD or Fusion drive. Both mac minis use the same core processor.

I was thinking of dropping for the server model to replace my ageing Mac Pro but now I'm tempted by the non server model to use with an Apollo via thunderbolt and use external drives for audio.

What do all you Mac mini users think?

You can still get the server and install aftermarket 7200 drives pretty easily. OWC has videos to show you how.

I also think you can add a second drive to the non-servers. If that's the case I'd get the $799 one, upgrade the CPU for the extra the server costs. Then add my own SSD and 7200 rpm drive.

Oh and up the ram to 16gb also. Should be a killer little rig.
