Default Reverted to back to PT 7.4 LE

Digi state on their website:

'Pro Tools 8 has the same RAM requirements as Pro Tools 7.4'

But they don't mention anything about the CPU or Graphics card!

I was running 7.4LE on a Dell 6000 laptop 1.73ghz Pentium M with 2GB ram and all was ticking over nicely but when I put PT 8.0 on the system it choked!

I reverted back after one day.

It seems that cs2 hasn't fixed the problem, but really I'm not so bothered. I've realized that there's not many benefits in PT 8 for me really. For those of us who have sought out 3rd party software over past years the new digi suite is no big deal:

1) iDrum or Boom?
2) Arts vista piano or baby grand?
3) NI B3 or DB-33?
4) Amplitube or Eleven free?

I'd choose all of those 3rd party Vi's over the 'new' digi' ones. I can see how it's good for new users who don't yet have any other software - for sure, it must be great, you stick in a PT8 disc and everything's there and waiting.

To be honest, I find the original plugsound modules are of more use to me than Xpand!

Plus, I really prefer the old GUI - call me sad, but If I wanted a GUI like Logic I would buy Logic.

On another quick note - God bless Steve Massey - his plugs are awesome and the CT4 Compressor for me is just simply brilliant!

Just my thoughts!!

Have a good day yawl

How helpful of Digi to inform a long-running thread of the latest position.........
I rarely manage to search all through the DUC for odd bits of info like this!!!

Seems like it could be a long wait folks!

It looks like Digi might have something.
This is what I read in a "parallel" thread regarding CPU Usage:

(...)
I don't have the technical details in front of me, but it had to do with how blitting (rendering of graphical elements) was occurring - it's timing or something to that effect.

In any case, it looks like we have a fix, but as I said it will take some testing as the fix was rather invasive.

My CPU acts up for some odd reason when using Pro Tools 8, I'm getting the error: "The operating system held off interrupts for too long. If this occurs often, try increasing the H/W Buffer Size in the Playback Engine Dialog (-9092)" every time I hit play in a blank session with just 1 track. I literally just bought the computer. I'm using a brand new MBox 2 Pro (obviously using firewire), so I don't understand why this won't work properly, the machine seems to meet all the qualifications that Pro Tools requires. I'm using Pro Tools LE 8.0, but I have the same version working on another one of my desktop PC's perfectly so I don't think that has anything to do with it. Any ideas guys???

It looks like we got buried in the history dust... so...
in the mean time, encouraged by Shan, I jumped into the REAPER world and... I love it!
It is so efficient and powerful application and it has that... hmmm... freshness, openness and youth type of excitement feel...
It is a very, very, very lean application. It is fast and my CPU and RAM is barely touched by it.

I also tried it as ReWire in Pro Tools and it works great! REAPER accepts any kind of audio formats in the same session (I keep a lot of audio "notes" in ogg vorbis (lancer) format, so it saves me the conversion hassle and storage space. REAPER's plug-ins suite is BIG. REAPER accepts all kind of plug-ins formats (but RTAS).

I am sure I will be using REAPER. As soon as I get a CS update solving my PT8 problems in the CPU/RAM usage area, I will start to use PT again.

Man, when a successful fix happens it is going to be like Christmas all over again. I'm getting pretty good at workarounds but this is ridiculous. We purchased it, its broke - fix it! Please!

It does look like we've been lost....
This has been a big thread... and now looooong standing.

Digi Supt... is there any news, or shall I have to get my money back soon?

Are you still listening / looking at the DUC? And this thread in particular?

No reply would imply you're not.........

...... Hey Mark and all PT8 users, this REAPER looks really great, it is so flexible (you can tailor it to your needs in any area), lean, "CPU-friendly" or should I say "CPU-invisible", and it is only $50 (personal use, commercial - $225)... so... hmm... ...
