Default Buffer overrun error -6085

Hi All,

This is a new thing that just started.
Only change was upgrading to 7.4 and 10.4.11

Here is the message after about 1 minute of play back (2 tracks of stereo) and one track of guitar).

"The Audio device buffer Underflowed. If this occurs frequently, try decreasing the H/W Buffer Size in the playback engine panel or remove other devices from the audio firewire bus - 6085).

I've got Low Level Monitoring turned on as well as a reducing the buffer size of 128mb. I have NO plugin's turned on.

Any thoughts?

Maybe Plugins in your Plug In Folder that aren't compatible.

Knowing what kind of Machine and processors you are running will help. If its an Intel Mac and you have older plugins they may cause issues. Move all of your plugins to the Unused plugins folder and try running it again. These can be found at the "Your Name" HD>Library>Application Support>Digidesign. If it works with all of the plugin in the Unused folder, go through them one at a time Control Clicking and choosing "Get Info" They should all Say either Universal or Intel.

Secondly Pro Tools doesn't officially support 10.4.11 and some people have issues, some don't. Try the Pre-Binding Script found on Digi's support page. Or search Pre-Binding Script on this forum and I'm sure it will pop up. It may or may not help. Otherwise change out Firewire cables, try different ports. Are you using an External Hard Drive?? where is it plugged in? What hardware are you using? All of these things need to be stated to truly trouble shoot it.

My platform is in my sig-block.
Here is what I did:
Shut down everything and re-booted. Re-created the session in PT, re-imported the mp3 audio that I was working with and it seems to be fine now.

Probably just needed to reboot....

I was able to lay my bass tracks down without any issues.

Keeping my fingers crossed, if it happens again, I'll contact Digi.

10.11 only added 1 security bug fix and a bunch of non-trivial updates... I read it carefully and it didn't seem to really do much accept some i-life updates.

So, all seems good for now. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Question to Digi Tech though:
With the purchase of 7.4, does this come with a 30 or 90 day support?

No, I was using the internal 300gb drive of my imac when I got the error
When I recreated the session, I placed it on my USB2.0 Maxtor 300GB drive and the session file is fine.
But I mostly use the internal drive to record and backup the files to the maxtor.

Ummm, both of your audio drives are not ideal. The internal drive is suicide regardless of the track count and USB is no good because of the way it transfers data. You need an external firewire drive for the best possible Pro Tools performance. Check out OWC, 7200rpm drive with Oxford 911 chipset is the daddy.

Saying that i wouldn't expect an inapprociate drive to throw that particular error, normally a -9136. Most of the posts on the DUC with that error are when FW400 is combined with FW800 with the Mbox Pro. If you contact tech support you'll be shot down because of your audio drive, thats a must that needs to be addressed either way.

Finally, is there any particular reason you need your H/W buffer size so low, if you have LLM enabled then there isn't really a need for the buffer to be that low. I'm fairly sure recommended playback nowadays is recommended at 512 samples.

Cheers

The maxtor is also a Firewire drive, but 1. I don't have FW cable and 2. I'm out of FW ports on the iMac. I only have two ports. One is going to the 003 and the other is a FW800.

Maybe I should get the drive you recommend? Do they make a FW800 drive yet?

Also, I was running the buffer at 128 because I was running two plug-in's while recording.
Since I was doing bass tracks, I wanted compression and some EQ.

Any suggestions?

Ok, I checked. My Maxtor 300gb drive is also a Firewire drive as well as USB.
Should I be using it as a FW drive vs. USB?

If so, I'm out of FW ports on the iMac. I only have one FW400 and one FW800 (which is unused).
However, the 003 has two FW ports on the back. One is going to the iMac, the other is empty?
Can I plug the FW Drive into that????

Whats your thoughts?

Hi, forget FW800 on your MBP because that will cause major issues. If your drive is FW & USB that normally means only one FW400 port which is again a pain. You need a drive with two FW400 ports, you plug the drive in to the mac and the 003 in to the free port on the drive. FW drives are dying out and OWC do great drive enclosures with the recommended chipsets, the Oxford 911. Keep the maxtor for backup.

If you must reduce your buffers for recording you need to up them for playback. I find this a pain so i just use LLM and record everything dry.

Cheers

Read your post & possible recognition that error -9136 buffer issues may have something to do with 400 connected to 800.

I've got a new MacBookPro that came with 10.4.10 and has 2.44 & 4 GRam, w- Mbox & PT 7.4
This is an all new rig from my old set up: MBox fine from 7.1 version
like I said all new so there is no clutter to back track on.

why the error -9136? this thing should have cpu to spare times 20.

can't play for more than 20 seconds and PT error -9136 pops up .
can't record same
can't bounce to disk ... same

tried multiple variations and altered states within set-up etc... nothing.

what's up? any fix will be .

Digi should be more on top of this, I researched the compatibility 10 times over before taking the leap.
worst case how do I get back to work?
