Default Old system questions for spare editing workstation

Hi! I have a G4 800 properly intalled with PT 5.1.1 TD mix system and so.

I also have an old G3 which I was considering using it for a spare editing workstation. There I have PT 5.1.1 and PT 4.3.

a) Will I be able to edit sessions with only a d24 installed?

b) If Power mix only goes up to 4.3, do I have to reinstall PT athis G3 so that I can open it and go to the audio interfaces menu properly?
Since I moved the d24/dsp cards from it to my new G4 and no interfaces are connected it does not let me open neither 4.3 nor 5.1.
It says: Unable to create a DAE deck or low on memory.
I have also checked buffer size, which misteriously goes from (2) to Zero and DAE and PT memory is fine.

So, to be able to open PT and choose Power mix mode ( with no interface needed), do I have to reinstall everything and hook up at least one d24?

I am not considering PT free because my G4 sessions go over 8 tracks.

c) If installing Pt Free in there, Will it read all the tracks but only playback the first 8 voices? how does it accomplish this?

Thanks

I'll give it a shot.

You have to have a DSP farm alongside your d24 card (and you have to have an interface attached, that's where the system gets it's clock from).

Powermix runs in version 4 (right up to 4.3.2) - you'll get 16 tracks at 44.1 (no tracks at 48k - it uses the mac input/outputs so you can't have 48k sessions).

With Powermix you don't need any digi cards.

Although PT4.X.X won't open PT5.1 sessions, you'll have to save them as PT4 sessions.

I think, if I remember correctly - Powermix will let you open up more than 16 track sessions, but you can only play 16 voices???

Maybe a AM3 card would be an idea, you can run PTLE then (although the usual limitations apply - but you'll have upto 32 voices to play with - and you won't have to "save session copy as").

Any help? Any more questions?
