Default HD distortion

i am getting subtle but noticable distortion from my HD rig especially noticable with the bottom end. I'm not overloading outputs or inputs. It's more noticable when at louder listening levels. It's not the speakers as it's the same across several sets of monitors. Ideas anyone?

Thanks

You may overloading a plug-in insert.

Are you using any compression plugins on tracks, busses or program with really fast attack and release time settings?

Thanks guys. This is without plugins though but does get worse especially with compression plugins..
What optimum record level do you guys use. Do you tend to record around 0 db which is only 2 bars on the HD 192 or do you record higher?

Thanks so much for your info.

can you clarify? do you mean 0VU = -18 (or-20 for us POST guys)dBFS? or 0 dBFS? i would NOT run all your pre's so that each recorded signal is close to FULL SCALE (and, no, i am not referring to the recording school or the full amount a union player gets. ). the accumulated harmonic distortion will be ugly.

but maybe you know this...

perhaps you have a bad input chain. pre, cabling, microphone, uncalled input......

Tom,

Full scale hey, fish or lizard?
Idiot me meant Ovu or -18.
I know if you record too low there are supposed to be less bits used.
I am just worried that if I am using 85% of the headroom some distortion may creep in.
Have you tried the soft limit function also?

Cheers

John

If you're feeding the output of the 192 to a Mackie for monitoring.. don't... use something with more headroom.

in a 24 bit system, don't worry about the S/N ratio. things recorded around 0VU are plenty clean. this wasn't true with 16 bit systems.... i haven't tried the soft limit as i don't use the 192 analog ins.

as to rail's suggestion, that could be the culprit, try monitoring the seemingly distorted tracks in another way.
