Default -6086 and -9128 errors. No fix from General Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,

I keep getting -6086 errors telling me to increase my buffer and -9128 errors telling me to reduce plugins as i am running out of CPU. The 6086 error is much more frequent. For example, The current session I'm working on is comprised of 13 tracks (including a click track and master fader) and i am running 23 plugins (only digidesign plugins such as Xpand2 and Vacuum). After about a minute of playback the error comes up (usually the -6086 error).

I am running a Macbook Pro with 2.66ghz i7 processor and 4gb of ram with OS X 10.6.3. I just upgraded 2 days ago from an 2.66 core 2 duo imac hoping that pro tools would run better/it would help fix the problem, but so far i've had no improvements..(I used migration assistant to transfer all my application and user data from the old imac to this laptop)

I have a 500GB Macpower Taurus running on FW 800. It has an oxford 924 chipset. I am daisy chaining my Digi 003R off of my drive. So, Digi 003R via FW400 into Macpower taurus and Macpower Taurus via FW800 into macbook pro. I do all my writing/playback to this drive. I had it formatted to Mac OS Extended Journaled

I have protools 8.04.

Peripherals: Ilok Dongle (USB), Usb Mouse, FW 800 drive

In my playback engine I am running buffer @ 32, using 3/4 Host Processors, and have CPU Usage limit at 95%. I have my disk buffer and plugin buffer set to normal (although I seem to get better results switching my disk buffer to large and level 4 but still lots of errors). I don't like raising the buffer due to the delay it creates when recording, and when using low latency monitoring it turns off the plugins, which is no good when recording guitars with effects etc. I also have had almost the same number of errors at higher buffer rates eg 512 samples.

General Trouble Shooting tried so far:
Plug-In Compatibility ( I now only have the digi standard plugins installed and have included my version list), General Setup and System Optimizations, Energy Saver, AirPort, Bluetooth, Firewire Networking, Pace Drivers, Delete Pro Tools preferences, Repair Permissions, Login Items, StartupItems, FileVault, Spotlight Indexing

Plugin Version List

Try reducing the number of processors in the Playback Engine by 1 (so if you have 2 available, try 1).

Ok, so i formatted my boot drive on my macbook pro and reinstalled Pro Tools from scratch and then updated it. I then installed the latest versions of Melodyne Editor and Trigger platinum and Ableton Live.

Still having the same problem. buffer at 128, using 3 out of 4 cores.

Why is this happening?

Does raising the Hardware Buffer Size reduce or eliminate the errors? I know you said you don't want to do that, but I'm just curious if it changes anything - it helps me understand where the problem lies. Depending on the plug-ins and VI's you have in your session and how much polyphony they're using, it could be that you're maxing out processing. What does the CPU Usage window show?

One other thing to try - do a 'Save Copy In' and save the session to your internal driver (make sure to select the option to copy all audio files), then shut down and disconnect the drive, reconnect the 003 to the computer directly, boot up and test the session from your internal drive.

Another possibility is that you may still have Firewire Networking enabled - are you absolutely sure you disabled that in your Network preference pane?

It happens even at 1024 samples. Seems to help a bit but doesn't get rid of the problem. The CPU (RTAS) meter is between 20 and 40%. Disk is between 1 & 2%.

I managed to get playback working well by checking the ignore errors box in the playback engine window. I had buffer at 256, using 3 of 4 processors, CPU @ 99%. I've got DAE playback buffer at level 2 and i put cache size on large as it says it improves performance. I also have the optimize box ticked for plugin streaming buffer.

I just tried recording with those settings and after a few minutes i get a 9073 error (drive not fast enough) (that was recording 7 microphones on a drumset at once)

Firewire networking was never enabled in the first place.

If it works on my internal, what's the deal? I need a new firewire drive? It should work.. just to recap - Macpower Taurus with a 7200rpm 500gb hard-disk in it. It has the oxford 924 chipset. Im running fw800 from MBP to Drive then Firewire 400 from drive to 003R+.

Really appreciate your support

Ok i shifted the session to the Macbook Pro Hard disk and the errors have disappeared!!!! So, what do you suggest I do. Buy a new drive? OR should i get some kind of Firewire bus for the macbook pro so that I don't have to daisy chain?

Given this seems drive related, you probably could do either one. I use a Siig 2 port Firewire 400 card and attach my interface to that, while connecting the FW800 drives to the computers built in FW800 port. It may be cheaper to do that (about $40-$50) rather than getting a new drive, but it may not fix the problem if the drive is actually having other problems or is somehow incompatible (I'm not familiar with the drive you have).

Ok, so basically I've been researching, and I think im going to try a firewire 800 hub so that I have 2 firewire 800 inputs for my macbook pro, then I will use a converter cable for the interface and wont have to daisy chain. If that doesn't work, i will try switching things around so that its macbook pro > interface > drive just to see if it works....

Wish me luck, this is getting really annoying
