hardware strategies requested
I'm trying to record a pretty standard band: drums, two guitars, bass, assorted vocals. Nothing too tricky at all. I'm running LE 6.7 on a Powerbook G4 connected to an 002R. I also have a Behringer 4-channel pre-amp/DI box to get all 8 mics on the drum kit up to line level (the first four can use the 002R's pre's).
What I'd like to be able to do is record those 8 tracks of drums at 96k and funnel everything else through a mixer that can dump two tracks of output into the RCA inputs of the 002R...the idea here is to get the drums down first and have everything else on board as scratch tracks, then go back and do the guitars, vocals, and bass for real at 96k after we're satisfied with the drums. Can I actually do this or will I be forced to do the entire session at a lower sample rate if I'm using the auxilliary inputs? All help is appreciated. Is it possible to have some tracks at 96k and others at 48 or 44.1? |

or do you mean 1/4th" TRS? When using all analogue inputs you can record all at 96k. To see if you PB keeps up create a session at 96KHz and the track and start recording for half an hour or so. If it works this way, it will with the band. regs

Re: hardware strategies requested
In my experience the session sample rate is applied to all inputs including the S/PDIF and you can not mix them. You would need a 96K capable device for the S/PDIF (RCA).

Re: hardware strategies requested
ah yes, S/PDIF. (i see red and white, i think RCA.)
so that means i'll need some other sort of A/D converter between my mixer full of scratch tracks and the 002R? what are my options? i only really need two tracks, but i don't want to have to sample at lower than 96k. will PT let me take the 8 tracks from the main inputs at 96k and then however many i pipe in through the S/PDIF at whatever sample rate is available there, or would i have to invest in something that can also do 96k? |

Re: hardware strategies requested
a cheap option is the ART D/IO at $160. It will do the 96K a/d. The next step up is a steep one. The Apogee minimi or some digital mixer with 96k S/PDIF.

Re: hardware strategies requested
record scratch guitars, vox, bass, etc to a click. play that back to the drums and record drums then. otherwise.. yeah, you got to sub mix. you need a mixer.

Re: hardware strategies requested
click's not an option; i want the recording to be as live-sounding as possible.
i'll check out that ART box. part b... what's the cheapest 96k option that could connect directly to my powerbook and let me run PT so that i can leave my 002R at the studio for tracking but mix at home if i want to? |

Re: hardware strategies requested
no soluition. no digi hardware = no pro tools.
and your worried about musical integrity yet are gonna record on art and behringer gear? dude, unless your band is led zeppelin, most mediocre bands could benefit from a click. |

Re: hardware strategies requested
How would an mbox react to 96k sessions? do they not even load? that might be a solution for him. I say forget about 96 and 192 unless you have some serious gear, a killer room, and killer players. seriosly, at most 96 or 192 will accurately reproduce mediocre signal chains. get an mbox for editing and do all at 44.1k.
