Default Not to whip a dead horse but,

Some of you may know that I have relentlessly persued a reason why my M-audio Project Mix I/O control surface will not fully function with Pro tools 9, (Or
with any version I've tried with Pt's 9.) I hate mixing with a mouse. I started computer recording several years ago but I had a major setback, (A stroke and bypass surgery). While recovering I started recording with Alesis ADAT which let me use my Mackie 24/8 board to track and mix. Just like the old tape days. Prior to the stroke I had purchased the Project Mix. When I decided to return to Pro tools I Purchased the upgrade to 9 because I was told that Project Mix I/O was compatible with 9. After several on the phone sessions with Sweetwater they were unsuccessful in fixing the problem. Now they tell me that the problem isn't Pro tools/Project Mix compatibility but that It's because I can't do a firmware update on Windows 7 ! Can anyone confirm this and, if it's so, I'll drop the whole thing for good. Thanks.

firmware is the base command set written into nonvolatile memory (usually) of a device

I havent been following your earlier posts but can send you this link that has step by step directions to install the drivers and then to install/update the firmware. Many thanks Craig F and jasonhurley for your assistance. First, The software was updated but I don't think the firmware has been. Anyway this looks like it could be the solution to the problem. I am currently on Windows 7. will this procedure work for me? Will I need to remove my current I/O,(Audiophile 2496) pc hardware first and then Install the hardware for the Project Mix I/O? I currently have Internet access but I don't go on line unless it's for Avid info as I fear corruption of my system. I was told, and I don't recall the source, that I could not run a firmware update for the Project Mix on Windows 7,(?).
I know I am requesting a lot of info and I don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth but I will be most appreciative if this works. Thanks again.

Thanks necjamc. I'm venturing into unknown territory with this endeavor. One more, and I hope the last question. My pc is Windows 7, 32 bit. My wife's is an older operating system. Windows Vista, (I think). Anyway, I know it is one of the 2 listed on the Avid link you supplied and I'll verify before proceeding. Here's the question. Can I download the firmware updater to my wifes computer to a CD, then put the CD in my pc and install it ??
I've used this process for driver downloads and it worked. I don't want to do anything that might screw up the war departments' pc. Again, thanks for your help

Thats a good question... I'm not sure... I usually always do this while being "online" on the actual computer I am updating the firmware with....

I'm gonna say no. I'm assuming the problem with windows 7 is related to the actual update to the firmware and no matter where the file came from you still might encounter that problem. That's not for sure, but I oils t risk bricking it. It's a big risk to take. If possible, and the OS on your wife's computer is the right one, I would do the updates there. And just uninstall drivers etc after. Just to be safe.

I can't see how this could create any problem. All you are doing is downloading a cloned file, temporarily storing it on a computer (albeit it on a OS that the file IF OPENED would not run on), then copying it to disk.

A downloaded file does not change its composition no matter what computer or media it's copied to, it just won't run if opened on a computer that is running an OS that the file is not compatible with.
