Thumbs down ProTools 8 Rewriting Audio Files

I just thought I would share a disturbing situation that is occurring when opening ProTools sessions between versions 7 and 8. It doesn't matter whether a ProTools 7 session is opened using ProTools 8 or vice versa, all audio files in the session are recalculated and redated. This means that the original audio files are replaced with a new version. The date created remains the same, but the date modified changes. i am on a project that I have been working on for quite some time and today all my files became renamed with todays date. NOT A HAPPY CAMPER

Also, when a ProTools 7 session is opened using Protools 8, the resultant, converted file size is larger. For example: a 1.57 GB .WAV file, recorded at 24 bits/96 kHz, became a 1.62 GB file after conversion. This file size increase is happening to every audio file in the session without prompting or opportunity to opt out. The only indication of activity is the opening of the Task Manager window when the session is opened.

thusly, this disturbing situation is rendering all my backups obsolete too

you guys dealing with this ??

i don't understand why this was written into the code or what is really going on

Yes, this is for the 16 bit overview files that let the grid lines show through the regions

yeah, should just be redoing the waveform overviews, not making new files.

see pg 2 in the 8.0 read me.

Yes I've noticed this, bit of a nightmare when you need to open old sessions or refer back to versions of mixes etc.
I hope this can be fixed in cs4 asap! (Ever the optimist...)

I doubt it, as every time a waveform overview is calculated the date of the file is modified, whether it's done manually ("recalculate waveform overviews") or automatically. Going back from v8 to v7 is just as bad, as the overviews are all recalculated again, presumably back into 8-bit form.

Upgrade Rule #1: Never upgrade in the middle of a big project if at all possible.

Right, but even if you don't choose to upgrade, but you send your session to someone else to work on who is using PT8, it can be a nightmare when the session and files come back to you, and you need to reintegrate the session or do an incremental backup.

This is completely normal and not something that will (or should) be fixed.

PT8 uses 16 bit waveforms and stores them in the file itself. PT7 uses 8 bit waveforms and stores them in the same area as PT8, so if you switch back and forth, the waveforms need to be recalculated for each version.

Yes, it's a pain, but the alternatives would have been even more painful...

What were the alternatives. I am very curious to know.

I understand the reason for the change, but the inconvenience is no small matter.
