Default automating plugins

I'm still not getting it very well. If lets say I just want a huge reverb to hit on just one snare and then return to normal is that something that can pop it instantely and then pop out, or is it really somthing more like a audio suite that has to be planned to come in and out. another words it doesn't really happen in real time. Anyway I realize im not understanding it well can somone run me through the step by step process Thanks
