Adat/spdif
There has been much confusion in our camp on whether you can hook up the 8 channels ADAT and 2 channels SPDIF at the same time. The manual says or but that is where the confusion comes in. Digi says the 003 factory has 18 channels but before I invest in a 2 channel unit for the spdif connection I would like to know. Also, How would the route of the word clock cable run? I have a M-Audio Octane running thru Adat. Thanks for all the help.

Re: Adat/spdif
Hi & WELCOME Jeremy @ 9:15 ...
OK so 18 simultaneous channels is just that... SPDIF & ADAT have nuthin to do with each other meaning they're independent... As for the clock, that depends on what u get & want/need to clock from...

Re: Adat/spdif
Which ever unit you choose as the master clock must clock the others.
Since the Octane and 003 have WC connections look for a SPdif unit with WC also just to keep things simple. You can daisy-chain the wordclock--Use the WC out of the chosen Master unit connected to the in of the next piece(set to slave) with the out of that connected to the in of the next (also set to slave). Use whichever piece has the best clock as the master. Alternatively use a external clock with multiple WC outputs (the master) to feed all of the gear (set to slave). ADAT and SPdif connections pass clock as well but consider yourself lucky the you have wordclock to use (I'm a 002R user)...It certainly simplifies the connections IMHO. MR

Re: Adat/spdif
Some people have had better results not using word clock even if the device has it. Instead they select (for example) the adat clock of external unit. For example I have heard the Apogee Ensemble works better this way (in Protools, selecting the Apogee Clock thru Adat).
You may want to try yours a few different ways. It might make a difference or may not, but at least you'll know. |
