Default Midi input problem with Reason Adapted

Hi. I have a Yamaha digital piano which i use as my midi controller.
When i open Reason Adapted on its own, the yamaha works fine for controlling the devices etc.

My problem is that when i open Reason Adapted through Pro Tools (using Rewire, of course), i get this message from Reason: "Midi input problem - One or several of the midi inputs could not be opened. They might be in use by another application. Open the preferences dialogue and check your midi settings."

So i open up the preferences and try to select the Yamaha and it tells me basically the same thing: that my midi input is being used by another program. This "other program" must be Pro Tools since its the only other program im running.

So whats the deal here? Do i have to disable the midi device in Pro Tools or something like that? Any help would be much appreciated...

When using Reason rewired into Pro Tools, you should record the MIDI into Pro Tools Instrument or MIDI tracks.

Maybe I wasn't clear; you record the MIDI in Pro Tools. You select the input in Pro Tools. You select the instrument in Reason that you are trying to control on the Pro Tools MIDI output dropdown. When Rewired, you do not select MIDI inputs in Reason; that is done in Pro Tools.

Read the Reason/Pro Tools tutorial on Propellerhead's site.

cool, cool. Ive got it goin now...

The only other thing id like to know is: was the problem i had typical? I mean, did it happen because i was going about it the wrong way? Or is there somthin actually wrong with my midi setup?

Theoretically, should i have been able to get it workin the way i was trying???

Not with Windows Pro Tools, no. It "steals" MIDI I/O from all other applications when running.

Very typical problem/complaint.

oh ok. So youre saying that if was Mac Pro Tools then it would be able to work that way...?

I was confused becaused the guy on the "introduction to reason adapted" video did what i was doing (i.e. running reason on a aux input track), and he was gettin the midi contoller to work fine. And he was usin a Mac..

I think i get it now: theoretically i cant run it through an aux input and use a midi controller because im using Windows Pro Tools.

Am i on the money?
