Default Can a firewire cable that's longer cause PT to Quit Unexpectedly ?

I've been trying to suss out what's causing my PT to quit unexpectedly . I've re installed everything , went through all my settings , checked the compatibility of all of my plug ins , ect. Still , whenever I click around ,counter freezes and see ya.No errors , nothing. While checking all of my drives , I wondered if the 400 firewire cable connecting my 002 to my cpu was a bit long. It was definitely more than I needed but I never measured it or questioned it's performance value because it was the one that came with my interface , supplied by Digi. Then I read on the digidesign site that they recommend using a firewire cable to link the 002 NO LONGER THAN 14 ft . I measured the one digi supplied and it was about 16 ft . I mangled my setup temporarily so my cpu was closer and plugged in the only other firewire I have available right now ( a 2 ft cable ) and so far so good . No crashes yet.Has anyone ever heard of this ? Too long of a firewire cable causing PT to quit ? I thought it was my external drives for sure considering that that's where my audio is stored and PT seemed to crash when I would click to different parts of a song rather fast during play back.
If so , why would digi supply a cable lenght that they don't support ?

Thank you
