PT 11 default to opened state when starting automation

Kinda hard to describe my problem but sounds like I am missing something here. PT11. Open template up, import audio files. Template automation window only automates volume (only thing lit). Make changes in volume, panning especially, etc. At this time, all auto is off.

Make location, command all write auto, and hit play. Pan goes back to state where it was before I adjusted it (for instance, returns to middle after I had set up mix with all auto off).

What am I doing wrong here, or what is missing for me? IF I automate the panning in my initial WRITE then of course it does not change. However, if I do NOT want to automate panning, then the channel goes back to middle (fopr instance).

Is there something I forgot to do in my initial setup, or process? Help, please....
