Personally I just don't see why and how they would come with something called 9.
I think one of them should show some balls and humor the H*** out of this childish industry and update their next software by like 20 increments. If AVID got its cool going on then they would call it Pro Tools 28 with a big ASSSS smiley, maybe like this

ProTools™ HD|3 Version 28.

My guess is that Pro Tools 8.5 will come out.. as a semi-teaser for Avid Pro Tools X. I suspect another major user interface update on vers. X and more options .. Pro Tools Lite, Home Studio, Pro editions. Something like that. We're already seeing inklings of that.

I'm with Darney.

8.5 then 'X' at least 12 months from now to coincide with the next 'HD'.

There'll be new AIR stuff of course, and maybe another 'LE' style hardware interface early this year as a cash cow for them, with lots of freebies thrown in.

So maybe AVID is feeling obliged to follow suit although IMO that would seriously mess with my respect of that company. Personally I dont think digi will put out 9 in March but then again they went from 7.4 to 8.0 which is a humongous step.

But to state state that there is a ZERO chance for this happening would be ignorant
thats what i was getting at

I heard that something's coming up this year. I think it's not PT9. But it will run on any interface. And with ADC.

Well Avid has announced formal support for the Mackie Onyx range with Pro Tools M-powered... not quite any interface but the first non-Avid one.
