Default Midi issue with 2 USB Inputs

This is kind of a difficult question, but I'm running out of ideas!

I have an electronic drum set plugged in via USB on my computer. I also have an electronic piano going into my fireface ufx, which is connected to my computer with USB.

Now the problem is...

My drums are only triggering when I select the /fireface/ input, and the drums are actually triggering the piano. Then, when I set up the instrument channel to receive input from the drums, the midi gets locked up and no sound is made.

My thought is that the drums and fireface(keyboard) are both going into the computer VIA USB so pro tools is seeing them as one input? But I downloaded Midi OX to see what is really happening, and it shows that the fireface (keyboard) is being sent through midi input one, and the drums are on midi input 5.

I think this is a pro tools issue. hopefully someone can help!

Thanks!

First, you need to provide full system specs.
Mac/pc, os versions, PT version, ram, everything; check
Help Us Help You
Have you experience with midi or are you new to this?
Have you a basic understanding of midi/instrument tracks and routing in PT?
We need to know.
Just trying to help.

I feel like im pretty advanced at this. That's why this is such a problem. Never had a problem like this.

Update. I went into Midi Devices and turned everything off except the Drums and still didn't work.

Can I just make a video of the problem, stick it up on youtube and link it here? It'd be easier to explain that way. Ha

Edit: Ill update with specs when possible.

I've always set the input of MIDI and Inst tracks to All. That way, any MIDI signal will affect the track, regardless of the device/channel it originated on.

Default Re: Midi issue with 2 USB Inputs

Since Windows is where my experience lies, here are the important details(can't imagine its much different on a Mac).

#1-in Pro Tools, go to Setup>Midi>Midi Studio. In this window, create 2 new "instruments"(one is the drum kit and the other is the keyboard). Name them as you like. The brand and model are not required(so don't worry if your exact units are not listed and just leave those selections blank). Next is the crucial setting and that is the Input Path. This is where PT will "look for" midi data. The drum kit path will probably look something like "Ekit on USB[Emulated]"(obviously, it will more likely say whatever brand your drum kit is, but this is the general idea). The keyboard path would be more like "Fireface Midi In"(hopefully, the selections will be obvious).

#2-Midi channels; set the drum kit to use midi channel 10(channel 10 is the "standard" for drums and percussion) so de-select the rest. For the keyboard, I would keep all channels selected EXCEPT for channel 10. As for the Send channels, you can de-select all unless you need to send midi back to the hardware(if you do, select the same as the Receive channels.

Apologies for the split reply, the DUC hates when I type this much info...

#3-back in your sessions, go to View>Mix Window Shows and check "Instruments". This will add a row across the top of the MIX window where you can see the midi IO settings. That's where you can set any given Midi/Instrument channels receive assignment(so set it to the drum kit for recording drum midi or to the keyboard for recording other stuff).

#4-in case you need to record both at the same time, put the first track into record-ready by clicking on the record button, to add a second track into record-ready, hold SHIFT and click the next track's record button(if you don't, clicking record on the second track will cancel record on the first track. Its a "safety" feature)

Thank you for the replies! I got time to test it, and now doing those steps results in a protools crash 100% of the time.

I recorded the orginal issue as well as steps to reproduce the crash.

Default Re: Midi issue with 2 USB Inputs

It just occurred to me, I've been using my Saffire's DIN MIDI input for my Keystation for a few months because Windows stopped receiving data from it via USB. I just tested the keyboard with my phone using an Apple camera kit - works fine. So, checked the Keystation in Device Manager - says "device not migrated." Google that and you'll get a flood of frustrated Windows MIDI users.

Bottom line, Microsoft broke their PnP MIDI driver some time ago and doesn't care. We're screwed.

Well, thats a bummer to hear. Luckily the fireface has 2 midi ins/outs. So I can just buy a usb to midi chord and go that route.
