Default Re: has anyone a/b\'d performance of a g3 vs. a g4

Sheesh, left this thread days ago. I say it again g3's are buggy, and overall, bus speed is a factor in speed increase. Dont get a g3, buy a g4. Period. I'm not "dead wrong". My office has 25 macs, which ones turn out to be buggy? You guessed it g3's. Which one runs smooth? you guessed it g4's. I suspcet g5's will be even better. But hey, you wise wizzards of allthings tech will have you happy with a G3, hey who knows maybe I'll get around to upgrading my 604e j700, that is if I can find a use.

I'm behind your knowledge and experience 100% Sugarite, and I've noticed you're a xlr8yourmac guy as well (kudo's, I do however frequent the Guru's), but I (I apologize that I didn't go to over to Breeden's and do my extensive homework) believe that the only "upgrade" card that had issue's with RAM, was the (now defunct) NewerTech's.

I'm actually in the quandry right now of deciding whether or not to get an XLR8 CarrierMPe w/G3/500 for my 9500 or just wait it out and get a new/new-used G4(___)single or dual processor. Which, I do also do graphics (photoshop, DRAW, Strata3D) and could benefit from altivec, but I refuse to give up 6 PCI slots (well, 4 actually).

Just my $.02

A note on Strata for you, seems to have a windowshade bug on a new G4, on a old G3 it just crashed often. They'll get it right someday. So if you rely on strata, you might want to wiat till they upgrade it.

Kama>> Check to see if any of your B&W G3's are rev 1 (ATA chip will not say '402'), they have buggy ATA controllers. I've found all other G3 models to be very stable. System bus speed is a factor sure, just not a significant one in my experience. Altivec is WAY more significant, and my point is that it's not worth paying much more for a G4 when you're using non-altivec software, such as ProTools. Chances are G5's will have improvements that help non-altivec usage greatly, but then G3's will be even cheaper...

guitates>> All I can say is that's what I paid for mine, found it on a newsgroup. Mine's actually a 450MHz G3 clocked up to 500, but it's only $10 more for a 500MHz zif than a 450 now at OWC. I'm pretty good at finding good deals, your results may vary. I still say a G3/500 + good outboard reverb + UWSCSI can be bought for less than a bottom end new G4 and mix circles around it.

FYI Just working out another rev 2 B&W deal now for my brother, 450MHz, 256mb ram, Adaptec 2940U2W SCSI card, 9GB U2W SCSI drive, all for $800US equiv. And I'm in Canada, it should be harder for me...

As a finder's fee I get to keep the U2W card and drive and replace them with a 13BG ATA drive and 2930 narrow SCSI card.
